Today I have an update icon on start up. When clicking on icon the configuration screen shows 2 updates available but after 45 minutes still the 1st one only is showing, saying do not turn off computer although I have. How are updates still happening since these ceased 2 days ago? Does it mean my laptop has been hacked.

end of support does not mean updates will not released. It just means you cannot bother MS with WIn7 Issues.

Peopel will still Run7, peopel will still make and discover new virus and flaws. Anyoen on the internet becomes a vulnerability. Vulerabilities get patched. WinXP was patched many years after EOS

List the updates availble. Do you need them? - if you thought updates were dead, why is your WU service still active?

Your pc has been workign for a decadee, why u updating now?

- You can backup/ clean teh software dist folder. It is easily googled; all guides are teh same. somethign liek this
enames the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old , essentially clearing the Windows Update download cache so that it can start over.

- Or you can note the kb and downlaod manually
- OR since it is the 2 newest updates- it will be in the MS catelog - search by date release, most recent

- It will be a 6mb EOS update with nothign but useuless crap in and teh 2020-14-01 Roolup, again, containign nothign but crap

- run CMD ipconfig /flushdns
- it may not be a WU issue, could just be you net. MS are basting the servers, renevating the MS catelog, stripping Files and remvoign updates. I have been watchign files drop for 3 weeks. They also seem to be clocking speeds on peopel and varyign them at certain times.

It is not an end of support it is End of life, Microsoft will not be producing any more updates, patches or other fixes, unless you are a Volume licence customer (large businesses and Enterprises) and you pay for each copy of software to be supported.

3rd party software developers will continue to support their products whilst there is still a profit to be made but even these will stop when these are not enough people buying the Windows 7 compatible software. This will not happen overnight but it will happen

Please boot your computer with Windows Installation Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please execute below command and reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

Code:
mkdir C:\scratch

DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions /ScratchDir:C:\Scratch

Please replace all of the partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

"...saying do not turn off computer although I have..."
I thought it was not a good idea to turn off a computer in the midst of a Microsoft Windows Update, am I mistaken?
