Update notification no active?

I am using windows 7 home premium and have it set to install important updates. If there were available updates both important and optional the notification icon in the task bar would appear. I wouldn't go away until after the updates were installed. Now I have 6 available updates and the notifcation is not active. The action center is not showing updates are available ether. I have to go into windows update myself in order to fix the problem. Any suggestions?

I believe that the notification only works for important updates, and possibly for updates you haven't looked at. If you have responded to the notification and looked at the updates but decided not to get them, it may be re-setting the flag to tell you that there are updates.
