Update stuck on 4 of 8

I have a HP G60 laptop. I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 (32 bit) Home Premium with no problems. Everything runs great, but when I rebooted, I got a message that there is an update now in progress. As far as I could tell, it started at 4 of 8 (i don't recall seeing the previous 3 updates). It's been on 4 of 8 for about 30 minutes. Should I reboot? Or what? There seems to be some HD activity; the HD light blinks. Do some of these updates take a really long time?

An hour??? Really? I've never had an hour-long update for XP or Vista. Is this common?

No, but you want to be on the safe side before messing around.

It's been an hour. The HD light is still on showing some sort of activity. BUT....an hour?

An hour is unreasonable. You gotta do what you gotta do. I guess you will need to reboot it.

Well, I took the bull by the horns and just turned it off. Waited a minute, then back on. At first where was a blur of updates (text based) ending with 909/909 changes to the registry; then it went back to the choose OS screen (I have Ubuntu as another OS on the computer); now the OS is back and I'm logging in. There's a moral in this somewhere. Now, back to my original problem.....

See which Updates were installed and any still needing install.

The way to undo Updates which cause any performance problems for any reason is System Restore. Then add them back one-by-one until you isolate the problem Update

There was another request to reboot for an update, but now all is good, except that I'm back to the original problem, which is that I can't connect to my XP computer from the laptop. If it isn't one thing, it's something else.

disable a/v realtime protection if running.
maybe run updates only in forground from now on, in my experience automatic background updates are slow and less reliable. You can still set it to harass you when updates are available automatically.
