What do I do if Windows Update is stuck on update 133 of 184?

I had to restore my Windows 7 Home edition Netbook from a hidden partition to a factory reset state. It is running windows update and is stuck on update 133 of 184. The update 133 is KB3086255.

Reviewing the list of updates installed with the first windows update run, all installed except Windows 7 SP1. I had to do manually, it failed thru windows update.

When I ran windows update a second time, 184 updates were available (including an update of windows update) and it now appears to be stuck for the last 6 hrs on update 133. Looking at the list of installed updates, most are 'pending', 6 have 'failed' (related to Netframework mostly) and a few were 'successful'.

Should I interrupt this process? How long should I let it run before intervening? If I do stop it I imagine it will be quite a mess with so many 'pending' installs.

I would stop and reboot. That should let the pendings complete.

Ok I did a restart. (Perhaps I was to shutdown?). Anyway it still says installing update 133 of 184.
Should I let this run for awhile, or should I do a forced shutdown with the the power button?

please let it run - shutting down during installation can cause big problems

Yes I figured it would. If it doesn't get past this, I might have to run the recovery again and start over. Ugh.

If you are still stuck, reboot into my recovery media.
Find the drive letter representing your windows partition.
Run the following command:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

If your windows partition does not show as C from the booted recovery media - for example, it might show as D if you have a small system partition at the beginning of the disk , then the command would be:

DISM /image:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

If that doesn't work, you can use dism++ to remove an update. Dism++ icon is on booted media desktop.

So it's still stuck. I downloaded the 17514x86.iso file from the CN Onedrive onto a USB stick. So what's the next step? I currently have a blue screen with the update still showing it is installing, and a warning about not powering off, and no access to the reboot function.

I downloaded the 17514x86.iso file from the CN Onedrive onto a USB stick.

That is a bootable iso file. It can be burned to dvd/cd as an image. Or it can used to create a bootable usb stick, using this:

You then to reboot your machine to the bootable usb you just created.

You may just need to use the power off button on your netbook.

On restart, keep pressing the ESC key to get to the one time boot menu, from which you select your bootable usb.

Well I got up this AM and almost fell over when I saw that the updates were finished and the screen was back to login screen!

I did note that all the Netframework updates failed. Do I even need Netframework if it's mostly local drive work I do on that machine? Can I just hide the updates?
