So after about a year of not getting to update windows and having it keep telling me windows need to be activated. Windows goes, you are activated you have 138 updates. So after about 2 GB of updates only about half get installed and says the others have failed.

Install drivers according to your hardware from their repsective manufacturers. Check device manager and devices and printers for any yellow exclamation marks indicating a particular driver you need.

When installing windows updates, only do important ones for now, and only install about 5-10 at the top at a time.

Aside from all of that, activating windows is very important. I had a computer that wouldn't activate windows because the hardware couldn't take the (complete) installation of windows (meaning it messed up). I bought a new CPU and then the installation and activation went perfect. But really it could be anything. are you saying windows automatically deactivates?

If Windows is not properly activated, you will have problems- and some downloaded updates may fail to install as a result.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

windows is working all good now,no clue how that happen, but most the updates that are failing are from april and june so could it maybe be that the other updates over ride them and they might not even be needed?

It's more likely that they've installed themselves later - check the listing by alphabetic order, rather than date order.

Even if you're no longer getting the non-genuine message, you may still want to post an MGADiag report, as the system may simply have slipped into Grace mode (in which case you'll get activation requests over the next few days)

Went all day so far with out the pop up saying this windows in not gen for does my desktop have the this windows isn't gen message any more. Think i did a MGADiagonce when this all started and that didn't do much help it was like it was register but it didn't know it was nor would it let me put any kind of code in.

Please don't hide things that aren't already hidden by the tool - it makes life difficult.
Specifically, in this case I need the CID - the second group of characters in the Product ID.

<edit> nevermind - I found your post from Dec 2009 - the CID is -838-, which is fine</edit>

You also need to go to validate Windows to remove an error messagethat indicated that your machine was out of grace period last time you attempted it - www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate
If/when it passes, you'll be offered IE9 and MSE - you don't have to take them!

OK - so if you look in the Update History, and double-click on a couple of the latest failed updates, what error messages are given?

The error message appears to indicate an incomplete download - which suggests that the data store is corrupted, or that another update is responsible for crashing a string of updates.
I suggest a complete reset of the WU components....

DOWNLOAD, but do not run yet, the two fixits 50123 and 50202 from
How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues
and
How do I reset Windows Update components?
(ignore the warning that 50123 doesn't apply - it does - and the pre-emptive run of 50202, as you need it twice anyhow)

then run:-
Fixit 50123 - reboot
Fixit 50202 in Normal mode - reboot
Fixit 50202 in Aggressive Mode - reboot.
then try updating again.
please then open the Update History, and post a screenshot of it if there's still failures
please list teh error messages for all failed updates with the KB numbers and codes.
(Running 50202 in Aggressive mode will delete the Update Hisory - but not the listing in Installed Updates)

The Windows Defender one is the one that's causing the problem - it's a Timeout error.

What Anti-Virus software are you running? What Anti-Malware?
Try turning Defender off in Control Panel - then go to Windows Updates, and click on Search for Updates again.
With any luck it won't pick up the WD update this time, and the others will install.

Nope still getting 8024200D even if I try to do just one. The WD one doesn't even show up now. I'm using NOD 32.

I can't believe that teh problem with is from NOD - unless you've had other AV's on there in the past? If so, which?

Are you using the Wndows Firewall, or one that came with NOD, or something else?

I did upgrade from NOD 4 to 5 tho that was back before I could even use the updates. I think the windows firewall is on.

It does seem that when I try to install the updates after they fail my shutdown button get that little update icon and trys to install them when the computer is shutting down not that it works or anything.

Disable windows defender in your services (search "run", click it, and in it type "services.msc", all without quotes).
Here is an example of how to disable a service:

Edit: However, there should be tools (in case this does not solve your issue) found online that will completely rid your computer of all remnants of the antivirus software (after which you would reinstall it, clean). If that program is the problem, this should solve it

Looks like that did it, disabling WD that is. Still shock about windows randomly going hey your good now. Restarted and saw that windows will now check your key and I'm like oh boy.
