Updates not installing/Public Folder

Hi,

I deleted my public folders a few days ago and now I can't do any updates!

Windows Live stopped working as did Evernote.

I don't want the Public folders and was hoping there is a way to solve this.

BTW, I did all the suggestions suggested on the thread for resetting win updates and ran the Fix It. The updates are also listing as for 32 bit?

Win 7 64 bit Home Premium.

Hello Dapa,

You could try doing a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this issue started to hopefully fix it.

Hi,

I made so many changes from your other posts that I don't want to. I hate the public folders; but I guess they are needed? Isn't there a way to change this? I know You did a tutorial on restoring and deleting them, but apparently deleting them causes a problem?

Also, why are the updates showing for Win 32 when I have 64?

Sorry, I am really new to all this. I usually just accepted the way Win7 was until I found this blog!

I have a tutorial on restoring specific Public folders, but I would never recommend to delete one though.

How did you go about deleting the C:\Users\Public folder? Maybe we may be able to help undo it.

You might see if you may be able to use Previous Versions to restore the Public folder from within the C:\Users folder.

Oh, I did that before I found your forum (stupid, I know!). No previous versions except today, which won't help.

Right click-delete.

As a test, create a new C:\Users\Public folder, and restart the computer to see if it may restore the default folders in it afterwards. If not, then see if you may be able to restore them using the tutorial below.

That's what I was afraid of. So much for getting lucky.

You could try running a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if it may be able to restore them since they are system files, but it will also restore any modified system files back to default as well.

If this fails, then it looks like the only option would be a repair install which would also undo any modifications to system files.

Thanks-I did that yesterday (I tried to solve this on my own) to no avail. I was so successful with removing the libraries and home group and now this!

I was already looking at the repair thread; I don't have a dvd disc, but have the repair discs from HP. I have a 16G Usb drive, but it is being used as a system booster. Can I do anything to reformat that?

What about if I reboot and use f8?

Also, finally, why do I need the public folder? I don't really understand that?
