Updating nvidia driver

I downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card yesterday from the nvidia site. Would like to hear the best way to install it. I've heard that if the old driver isn't removed properly then I'll have no end of problems. Any tips?

Bigseb,

If you install it, click Custom install. It should list a check box for a "clean install", and if you click it, it will automatically do all of this for you. However, you will have to (rather, only if you want to) go through the Nvidia Control Panel and set all of the settings back to how you liked them set.

Just choose the custom install, which will automatically uninstall the previous version and clean install the new.

You'll need to re-run your Windows Experience Index afterwards.

Nvidia does not uninstall old drivers, they are kept to enable 'Roll Back Driver' feature in Device Manager.

If you are worried overmuch about it, uninstall everything relating to the graphics driver (nvidia physx, driver, 3D) in control panel then do a "clean install" as I mentioned earlier in this post

That would be because those files are stored in the System32/DriverStore folder. The AMD uninstaller does the same thing, and Driver Sweeper and its ilk (good to see that not recommended so far) don't remove them either. What the Nvidia and AMD uninstallers remove is the currently installed driver files and relevant registry entries, the few left behind that something like Driver Sweeper finds get overwritten when the new is installed.
