Upgrade process
- Install was relatively painless. At the start it asked me to uninstall my ATI drivers and config tools which seemed odd but whatever.
- The upgrade was pretty much purely automatic but took 4hours +. Seemed to run through all my files and apps and I'd say my Vista setup was only a moderate size.
- Once complete the whole system was up and running, user accounts and all. No need to go to any vendors sites for drivers, which surprised me. Video, sound, etc. all worked.
- Network connection was flaky. After a few minutes I'd get kicked. The only way to resolve this was through right clicking the Network icon and 'troubleshoot problems'. This always resolved the problem but temporarily. By clicking on the 'view details' button I'd notice that the O/S would restart the card which leads me to believe it's a card driver problem. After some digging, I also turned off the option on the device driver to allow Windows to turn off the card if it's not in use. That appears to help. We'll see.
- Driver permissions were screwed up: One drive I didn't have any access to at all! Others it seemed to be only read permission. The work around goes as follows: Right click the drive, select Properties and the Security tab. Edit -> Add your user name with full-permissions. For some reason, although it says my username as administrator has full permissions, I need to add my username as a User as well. This despite the fact that this is the one account that created both the Vista and Windows 7 install and through which all my computer management is executed.
