Hi my first post here, having read through this topic i think most of my concerns have been answered. I have not yet installed win7 an kinda torn between creating a partition and installing there so i have both vista and 7 , or just doing an upgrade?or a clean install.( still deciding).

Thankyou

Having run the upgrade advisor it tells me that my acronis true image11 will not work does anyone know if there is a work around for this. Bit peeved as it was i first line of defence:(

Regards

I was torn myself between a upgrade or clean install of 7 myself, I just used Acronis 10 and made a clone of my current Vista 64Bit Ultimate and put it on one of my 3 1TB Hds, I then decided to go ahead and do a upgrade instead of a Clean install , I really did not want to reinstall all my programs..It took about 1Hr and 30 Minutes for the upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate to take place and all my programs worked perfectly, no errors of any kind, system is very zippy, I still have vista setting on the other HD just in case there is a disaster, but for now I am glad I did the upgrade and not the clean install......

Hi rsinbad,

You could use Paragon Drive Backup and Recovery 10 - it's free and it works beautifully on 7.

Not to minimize SIW2's suggestion (because I think he's got me convinced to switch from Acronis to Paragon) but Acronis TI 11 will install in W7 so you could uninstall it before your upgrade and then reinstall it.

Yes,

I installed ATI 11 on 7. I just prefer the Paragon - it is also officially 7 compatible.

Thanks guy's my initial worries were that if i had done the upgrade rather than the clean install, i would after that not be able to do the clean install.Having read through the method of clean install thats no longer a problem.

I have used acronis TI for several years and allway's given me peace of mind. Bit annoyed that acronis have not offered an update for this (maybe they will?)

I have made full backups of my existing vista just incase Will i be able to mount these images in win7 to retreive data?

If i reinstall ATI onto win7 will it fully function as i would want to make an initial backup of win7?

I would like to keep ATI ;but only if i can be sure it works, if there is then perhaps paragon is the way to go

regards

It runs OK. I hardly use it though.

Paragon is less resource intensive and is a better app. imo.

I also have Macrium (free Edition). If I want to make an image really quickly - I use Macrium . On highest priority it the fastest you can get - and considering the speed, cpu usage is low - lower than Acronis and considerably faster.

Both of those are more "efficient" than Acronis. The Paragon doesn't have a way of increasing priority/speed. I use Paragon mostly - just use Macrium if I want a backup image really fast. It's also tiny.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

The Paragon Drive Backup and Recovery 10 is also free of course - and has a lot more features than Macrium free edition.

There is an upgrade for Acronis; it's Acronis TIH 2010. Runs fabulously on W7. I love it both for making clones and scheduled compressed full and incremental image backups. 2010 has a lot of new features and the old ones are improved.

I understand there is an upgrade to the 2010 :but that means i'll have to pod out £24, I could understand if it was an early addition of ATI ;but the 11 version is not that old:(

Most companies work hard to make their products compatible with new OS and some drag their feet, maybe deliberately to gain more sales i don't know. I have emailed ATI and await there response.

You are correct ATI 11 isn't that old. You know what's a drag? ATI 2010 wasn't the next one released after 11, ATI Home 2009 snuck in there. So Acronis has released two versions since ATI 11 came out and, although you can get an upgrade discount, they aren't free upgrades for ATI 11 owners. That sucks IMHO.

I, too, emailed ATI a few weeks ago and since I had just purchased Home 2009 upgrade from ATI 11, they gave me ATI Home 2010 for around $20. I took the deal because I need ATI for a couple people who frequently come to me to get their system imaged back to the copy I keep for them.

I've had good success with ATI 11 but the main thing that bugs me is the 4 processes they run in the background. Very low resource use but they bug me. Three out of 4 can be disabled with something like CCleaner (or msconfig). For that (quirky) reason, I mainly use Acronis from a bootable flash drive and don't even install it.

@SIW2, I installed the Paragon 10 free and don't see where it runs anything in the backgound. Only launcher.exe and it's child plauncher_s.exe when you launch the program. I like that.

I enthusiastically concur with the Macrium suggestion. I tested both its create image and its restore image under Win7 a month ago and was duly impressed with its feature sets and ease of use.

In my case I created the system image on an external hard drive and Macrium's included Linux restore disc was able to locate and use both an external hard drive and a USB flash drive as its restore source. My previous experience with Acronis was that it did not include drivers able to see USB flash drives or external hard drives, thus mandating a need to create a WinPE restore disk or opting for the extremely painful option to store the images on DVD (from what I have seen from my tests with the latest version of Acronis TI, this is still the case).

These days I am using a Windows Home Server to daily image all my network-attached computers, but if I had to return to an installed software option it would be Macrium.
