Upgrade Domain Controllers to SP1 or not

Actually, I have 2 DC's 1 Threat Management Gateway, 1 Windows Server (Web Server), 1 Windows Storage Server, 2 Exchange servers and 1 Sharepoint Server and 2 Hyper-V servers. ALL Running Server 2008 R2

Should I be upgrading any of these to SP1?

Hello Abuttino,

I would recommend to wait until the "official" SP1 RTM is released by Microsoft sometime this first quarter of 2011. Afterwards, it should be available in Windows Update, and for download (standalone version) directly from Microsoft.

I would wait on all of them except the Hyper-V servers - Hyper-V gets quite a few updates with this release, but for regular Windows Server not so much other than bugfixes and some small performance improvements overall. I would wait some time, as I would with any major system update, to apply it to production servers that are otherwise performing properly - unless of course I had a reason not to wait, as in the case of SP1 and the Hyper-V improvements. So, wait until it's publicly released and downloadable from Microsoft directly, and then wait to install it for a month to six weeks (generally about the timeframe needed to be sure some rather large showstopper bug doesn't exist - let the early adopters bite the bullet!) on the Hyper-V servers, and wait until your next maintenance downtime window for the other boxes. As always, having backups before making any major system change is *strongly* recommended, so include the time that taking a good backup will require into your maintenance plans and timetables too.
