I'm upgrading from Vista SP1 (which was actually upgraded from XP a year ago) to Win7 RTM and after 4 hours the install fails with the message "This version of Windows could not be installed, Your previous version of Windows has been restored, and you can continue to use it."

I tracked down the error logs and here's the log at C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther
pastebin - collaborative debugging tool

Unless someone can decipher all this I'll just wait until I can get a new hard drive and do a clean install.

Thanks, I was just trying to find out if the XP to Vista upgrade might be something to do with it but I don't think it's a problem.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx

You might want to have a read on that page and maybe download the Upgrade advisor, because as quoted.

You'll get a report telling you if your PC can run Windows 7 and if there are any known compatibility issues. If an issue can be resolved, you'll get suggestions for next steps. For example, it may let you know that you need an updated driver for your printer and where to get it.

You should update Vista to Sp2, that update to Win7. If you Vista install is clean it will work fine. But the best way is to use Easy Transfer and do a clean install.

Good Luck
Ken

I updated to SP2 and got the same error when I upgraded. Same messages in the error log.

Would it possibly help if I uninstalled the programs it lists as incompatible? I had taken that as optional.
