I've got a question and sorry if it's been asked before. I want to take advantage of the half-price upgrade currently available. My question is, I am currently running XP Pro. Does that mean I can only upgrade to 7 Pro or can I upgrade to Home Premium? Thanks!!

You can use any upgrade version because you can't do an in-place upgrade from XP it will be a clean install.

I believe that you can upgrade to 7 home or 7 pro from any version of xp. The site that you buy from should have that info available. Hope this helps and welcpme to SF.

Thank you both!! I was confused as I read on another board that you can only upgrade to the same level. I have no problems with the clean install as I want to upgrade to the 64-bit anyway :D.

That is so with vista I think if you are trying to upgrade and save all your programs and such.

For the next person who looks at this, you can buy an upgrade if you have a genuine copy of Windows 2000 and above...

You qualify for Windows 7 upgrade versions if you are running genuine Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 on your PC.

Windows 7 - Buy and download from Microsoft Store

I spoke with the Microsoft Store some time ago, as did a couple other people, and they confirmed that any version of XP qualifies for upgrade pricing to Win 7 Home Premium or Professional, but as mentioned above, you will need to do a clean install. I myself will be upgrading two systems from XP Pro to Win 7 Home Premium.

DJG, did you happen to find out if it's possible to upgrade to a new, empty disk or does a previous version of Windows have to be installed first? I haven't come across a definite answer for this anywhere.

Well I apologize for my response, but even all thru that link, there was still no clear cut certainty that the process can be done on new hd.

Well for clear cut certainty we would need an upgrade disc to test , which nobody has yet. Given the similarities in the install method between vista and seven and the fact that microsoft said the same thing about vista and was proven wrong, the general consensus is windows 7 will work in the same manor as vista did.
