Hi just a quick question

I have just brought acer M7200 with vista 64 so I am entitled to a Win7
upgrade disc, now what's the best way to upgrade it, just upgrade then if ok just delete the windows.old file after or do a clean install.

if i do the upgrade will it leave loads of rubbish on the computer/registry after to sort out

thanks tintack

I personaly prefer a clean install over an upgrade. Simply because it doesn't create the windows.old file. But you can delete the old file for the most part their may be some residual user application data files that won't let you delete them without having to go to the registry. When I upgraded to 7600 RTM it left 4 user data files. Still i wish I would have just done a clean install. Fabe

I agree 100% with thefabe! While you will spend a little more time installing your apps, the end result will be worth it... Be sure to make an image of your drive/partition when you are finished, so you only have to go through this once...

What Happens Next?

QUESTION: What happens when the OEM release is made for the public?
If I purchase a full release say at CompUsa will I experience a smoothe install? Or will I have issues such as:
  • Peripheral Installs not fully installing
  • Boot issues, clean install.
  • Unable to do an install etc.
Boy I do not want to be on the "Help Desk" at Microsoft on that day!
Yeah I would! It'll be fun!

Unfortunately you cannot get tech support from MS for upgrades; that would be your manufacturer.

Hopefully the upgrade will be the clean copy MS provides, without the factory-installed bloatware that makes up a bigger part of the manufacturer's profit margine nowadays. But I'm wondering how folks with recent purchases are going to keep their Works and the 1-2 other valuable apps that come with the bloatware, besides the Adobe flash/reader and Java which is easily gotten on the web, since these are not on Win7 installer disks. I have Works on a disk here; the license key and all others can be read from your current install using Belarc advisor.

The Win7 installer gives the latest drivers in most cases, fololwed by Windows Updates witih more, so that you will really only need to have your wireless and possibly sound drivers on hand.

Acer tech support is pretty good. They offered to send us recovery disk set since we called within 90 days of purchase. Would never use them since we clean installed Vista from our own OEM copy to solve a blue screen issue and dump the bloatware, but they're good to have in case the machine needs to be restored to factory condition for resale or interact with their tech support since they won't support clean installs from OEM.

Would you image the drive right after setup finishes or do any updates first?
