Upgrade RAM from 4 to 16 GB, W7 won't boot; Ubuntu will

I have an ASUS N61Jv that came stock with 4 GB DDR3 RAM. Everything else is stock on the system except for a 500 GB Seagate Hybrid drive. I'm trying to upgrade to 16 GB (2x8 GB) and my install of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit fails at the loading windows black screen and reboots. "Attempt Repair" option fails, as well as trying to load the setup disc. I made sure UEFI setup in BIOS is disabled so as to not effect the W7 boot disc.

I would start to think it's a hardware issue, but BIOS recognizes 16 GB and I can boot into Ubuntu 12.10 (dual boot setup) and look up with an app that reports 16,xxx MB of RAM so I see Ubuntu can pretty much recognize the new RAM sticks as well.

Any other things to look up or attempt before being stuck with 4 GB for a while longer?

Have you tried setting up the memory using the manual settings in bios, per the manufacture's recommended settings for this particular memory? Voltage, latency, etc.

The Auto settings won't always work for this.

A bios update from Asus might also work for this.

The above post is worth looking into.
I also wanted to add that it's possible a memory stick arrived bad, and the bad addresses simply are not being used by ubuntu while they are being used by windows.

If you have the patience to let this run a few times, it will check ALL of the memory for you.

As Ubuntu is open source it is made to work with 99% of pcs is your pc ready for 64bit hae you tryed a 32bit running system or windows xp pro I would also advise checking bios and seeing if you can reflash to a more costom built pc bios this will guve you more options for voltages and addresses try running Ubuntu memory checker and see if it all passes

if so you did the same thing I did to my laptop less than a month ago I have a different brand mine is a acer but I went to the store bought 2 8 gig stick only to find out that my laptop could only handle 8gigs, long story short the guy gave me my money back for 1 of them left the other one in booted up long enough to see the bios said 8gig quickly turned it off and sent me on my way. Well it turns out that it dident like 1 8gig stick in there had to be 2 4gigs bought 2 4 gig sticks and now works great
PS anyone want to buy 1 8gig stick he wouldent refund that one

I'm on newest BIOS as of last lookup. I don't have custom settings unfortunately

Is there such a thing as an "aftermarket"-like BIOS that would give me these settings? Also, going to do memtest86 or Ubuntu built in one shortly.

I saw that and was hoping that just meant sometimes sub-models range in the RAM Asus supplies and that 8 GB was the max they sold but you may be right with the support issue.

this may aslo make a bios that will suport your RAM
