Once you have your key it may be possible to download the install media for 10 from Microsoft and install on your system using the Windows 7 key so an upgrade install would not be needed - check out the tutorials at or sister site Windows 10 Forums

O.k, Thanks for that will have a look........should get disc from friend today, but will only use it if it is genuine item, and has an activation key, which I am beginning to doubt, failing that am going to order the one from Amazon which seems to be legit......here's hoping......oh and could a moderator please change my username to just Del 80.....from Del 80Del......not sure how I ended up with that..............Del.

Del, If you get the disc from your friend, in addition to not using any disk that does not need a key, (a pirate disk), you should definitely NOT use any key they have unless you can be certain that they have not used the key previously. also as you have a Dell, you could use a Dell disk from your friend, but that would also have to be un-used. You should also not use a disc from any manufacturer other than Microsoft Direct or Dell.

The key may work initially to install but will likely never activate (or if it did, would normally be caught by Microsoft's regular checks so would not allow you to update the OS for security patches ETC)

Thanks for doing that........I now have the disc.....in a plain DVD sleeve, with WIN7 written on it in felt tip.....and no activation key .......probably best avoid.....still thinking about the one on Amazon.......Del.

That disc could be fine, made from an iso file or copied from another install disc.

Your problem is the key, you don`t have one

Just install one of the Linux distros we`ve already mentioned.

Then you`ll have to buy Windows 7 somewhere.

Did he even write the version of Windows 7 on the disc ?????

Have a look at either Novatech or Clevo, they are Custom builders.
i know Novatech still have copies of System Builder OEM versions of W7, about £120 (the right price! yelp)

As for the disk on Amazon, It does seem cheap, that could due to a scam, or it could be due to it having a limited use (only usable on Dell systems), as long as amazon's money back guarantee applies it may be worth a try - only you can decide of course

Thanks for that......still deciding what to do......in the meantime have just added 2 GB of RAM to the laptop......so gone from 1 GB to 3 GB...... made quite a difference.....now, what to do about this disc ?.......Del.

Re this disc.....the guy says that it contains all WIndows 7 operating sytems, and suggests using Ultimate, he says that it will work fine......but no mention of activation key......Del.

We know how to unlock all versions of a disc, but they are not sold and labeled like that, be careful.

But some mention you get a COA, so who knows if it`s legitimate ??
