Is that for a standard upgrade or does it allow you to use the clean-install tweak?

And how much will the non-upgrade version be? and the non-pro version?

Just shows someone at Microsoft awoke to the fact that Windows 8 might not be a big hit with the normal desktop crowd. Was there a deal this good before Windows 7 came out?

I'll be staying with Windows 7.

I'll be staying with Windows 7.

They had a limited time Win7 upgrade sale price of $50.

Will be getting a couple of the Win8 upgrade when on sale.
Been using it predominately for a while and it's pretty easy to get setup so you can work from the desktop.

Can understand those that don't like it, choice is a great thing.

That's because the bottom level Windows 8 won't let you upgrade from Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. Only Home Premium or lower. Windows 8 Pro allows upgrading from all versions of Windows 7.

Notice this quote from a Microsoft rep way down in the comments to that posting:

"if you are building a PC, you will want to purchase the Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro System Builder product. Otherwise, you will need to install that retail copy of Windows 7 you already have and then upgrade. A previous version of Windows (Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) must be installed on the PC you are wanting to upgrade."

So, if you intend to use this $40 deal, you must first install Windows 7 on a new build and then upgrade from 7. Or buy the more expensive "System Builder" product.

I'm not interested even if it were given away unless it had a more traditional interface.

But will it take out the loophole where you can install over clean (unkeyed) Win 8 installation?
