upgrade vista 64 bit to windows 7

HI!, everyone, completed an upgrade this evening from Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I appear to have lost all my files, ie pictures, documents, desktop. I dont think they have been deleted, and i didnt have a backup device. Any idea where they are hidden, or can i do a backwards re install with Vista 64 bit, then do a backup before installing again Windows 7

Look for the windows.old file under you C drive, they should be there.

If you re-install Vista you stand even more chance of losing data.

As Dude suggests, look in your Windows.old folder, which should include what you're after.

One hint for future reference. When doing a Custom install Windows wraps a bunch of system files, as well as programs and stuff under Program Files, and sticks them in Windows.old.

I have a bunch of "no install" programs(meaning they don't need any Registry settings) in folders under C:\Utils. When I do a Custom install over it, all I lose are the shortcuts. I just drag shortcuts for my favorite programs and I have all those little utilities I've grown used to, like hotkey tray apps, while I'm setting up the other stuff. It's really annoying when you hit a hotkey by conditioned reflex and nothing happens. Good to keep that kind of stuff in a folder that doesn't get wrapped.

We won't know anything until OP posts again. Which may never happen.
Every time I got a Windows.old folder it was from running a Custom Install.

Sometimes OP's will refer to a Custom install as an Upgrade because they are using an Upgrade version.
