Upgrade Vs Full version

can someone please clarify a few things for me.

1. the upgrade disks and the full disks are exactly the same EXCEPT the upgrade one requires proof that you own a copy of vista or xp.

2. what kind of proof does it require? does it just ask you for an XP/vista serial during the install?

thanks for the reply. it looks like you need an existing copy of windows installed to follow the steps in that tutorial. i have an oem copy of vista ultimate but wanted to install win 7 on an empty hd. in that case, what kind of proof would it require?

No existing copy is needed. The note under Option One says:

This option has been confirmed by me to be able to install from a formated blank drive or system, and install the retail upgrade Windows 7 and activate it without doing anything else.

1-Yes

2-an activated OS on the computer. No serial numbers

This is what the differences between upgrade and full are supposed to be. REcent evidence suggests there is less diferences in reality

Seriously, I think Microsoft probably originally wanted to have two paths, but it just didn't work out that way.

FWIW, I have used the Home Premium DVD to do a downgrade install (from the MSDN RTM Ultimate to Home Premium) and an upgrade install over the RC, keeping all the settings, programs, etc. As the note states, Brink has done it with a clean disk.

1. Correct.

2. The Upgrade version checks for an INSTALLED qualifying OS.... XP / Vista. It doesn't ask for a serial....nor does it ask you to insert your XP / Vista disk for verification.

There are ways around this. You can install the Upgrade version without entering your Product KEY. Then use the old Double Install Method.... or better yet, use the method on Paul Thurrott's site:
