Hello there,

I had installed windows 7 professional a year back. I have been observing from the past few months that the system frequently crashes and i get BSOD's. I have been thinking of upgrading from professional to ultimate. However i dont want to clean instal. I was thinking of doing a inplace ugradation. What i want to know is whether doing so will erase all my user accounts, installed software, movies, games etc?? Another point is that i also have Windows XP installed i.e i have a dual boot. Any help will be really appreciated.
Thank You.

I believe upgrading will retain your data, but it will also retain the problems you are upgrading to eliminate. Going from pro to ultimate wont give you relief.

Whrlwind,
As ZigZag, pointed out, upgrading is not going to solve your problems.

fill out your system specs for us and tell us about your problems.

Karl i have updated all the info using speccy. My problem is that i keep getting BSOD atleast 4-5 times in 1-2 hrs of heavy gaming. I think the problem is with the OS as the BSOD occur due to tcpip.sys etc. Im thinking of upgrading from professional to ultimate. Since an inplace upgradation doesnt solve the issue, a clean has to be done. What i would like to know is how to proceed with this. I want all my old files to be there. Further since i have dual boot, will the data get deleted if i uninstall windows 7? Or can they be accessed from the other OS which is XP SP2.
Gregrocker thank you for you link. Ill post the crash report but the crashes are due different reasons everytime. Sometimes it is atikmdag error, or irql_not_less_or_equal error or tcpip.sys error, etc. They are different everytime.
Thank Youi

Just to be sure I would run a full scan of all partitions and HD's with Malwarebytes .

Follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7, which are the same for retail.

If you have a Dual Boot with XP on separate HD's then unplug the XP HD during install, afterwards boot XP HD when needed by using the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key to trigger XP HD.

If XP is on the same HD, during booted Custom install use Drive Options to delete the Win7 partition, create and format a new partition there for install. Win7 will autoconfigure the Dual Boot with XP.

Thank you gregrocker for the very informative link. I will run the malwarebyte program. Additional doubts regarding the reinstallation of OS is

1) Do i have to backup the dive containing my movies also? What i mean is will the drive containing movies be formatted if i reinstall the OS? Suppose i dont instal windows 7 can they be accessed from XP?

2) Can i format only the partition containing the windows 7 OS?

3) Do i have to reinstall all the programs i have installed like daemon tools, adobe reader, etc?

4) Do i have to reinstall the games also?

Thank You

whirlwind8,
Thanks for the system info?

could you add either "self-build" or the manufacturer and model of the the computer to your specs?

A possibility is that by running a full scan with MalwareBytes that you will solve your problem.

Let us know the results of running MalwareBytes.

You many not need to perform another install of Win 7.

I would always back up my files during a reinstall, even if I don't delete or format the data partition. The data can still be lost in rare cases.

You must reinstall all programs and games, as explained in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. Some games like Steam will still run from their Programs File .exe but should be reinstalled eventually.

I scanned the system with malwarebytes and there was no malware. Is myHDD is slow compared to the processor and graphic cards?Do you think the BSOD's could be because of that?

I'm not an expert at anything so this is just one other avenue to explore. A few months ago I began getting BSODs several times a day on my laptop. Each BSOD had a different reason given. Sometimes my lappy would slow to a crawl. Several scans with different antimalware products showed no issues. I finally figured out one of my memory modules went bad (possibly due to some thunderstorms earlier that week.) Once I replaced the memory all was good. Not sure this applies in your case but . . .

I agree with Lee that testing the hardware would be a good idea. I would also test the HD to get that out of the way. These tests as well as others are in the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Work through all of the steps as well as any given by the BSOD experts in Crashes forum to get to the problem solution. Once you exhaust all of the troubleshooting steps you can try the Clean Reinstall.

Guys!! Finally i have some relief!! I switched the RAM from slots 1& 2 to 3 & 4!! No BSOD in about 4 hrs of gaming!! Thank you guys!!

Glad to hear it.
