I have a pc with windows xp that I want to upgrade to 7.

I read some posts that says that xp cannot be upgraded, and others that says it can.
Does anyone know for sure which is correct?

The other way I guess would be to upgrade XP to vista and then vista to 7.

Both are right. It can be upgraded in the sense that if you put a Windows 7 upgrade DVD in and run it, it will offer to install Windows 7. Where the upgrade doesn't actually "upgrade" is that you can't do an in-place upgrade, ie. keeping all of your programs and settings. It will instead take all of your XP stuff, throw it in a directory called windows.old, and do a clean, new install of Windows 7. You would then need to reinstall everything, and recover data from the windows.old directory.
