Ok well I'm dual booting 7 with XP now and just as it may be, 7 doesn't recognize my aftermarket PCI 10/100 Netgear Ethernet Adapter... My original one just stopped working, so I bought a new Netgear about 2-3 years ago and it has worked fine with XP/Vista but now I just installed Windows 7 and it only recognizes the VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapater that came with my computer, and not the NETGEAR FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter that I've been using. I located the drivers for the Netgear but it only goes up to Windows ME compatibility it says, but I had it working fine with Vista so that doesn't quite make sense.... Since I'm dual booting isnt there a way I can just copy files from XP to 7 to make it recognize the Netgear adapter..?? Thanks..

Have you tried installing the driver in XP compatibility mode?

is there a way you can get your computer close enough to your router to hook it up via wired connection? if so, connect it by wire and when it is running, try to go to windows update and see if you can download a newer driver via windows update.

The driver download includes a HELP.EXE that installs the driver from DOS and the highest it goes is ME/2000..?? But I dont understand how it came stock in my XP setup..?? And also it ran in vista fine... I'll search the chipset idea too, hopefully something gives here... Thanks, keep answers coming =)

Just look what's printed on the chip - likely Realtek!

I am using here the Netgear GA311 adapter (realtek chip) and it works flawlessly with the Realtek driver, obviously!

Hmmm, well I downloaded the chipset and set it to XP compatibility mode, rebooted, and it still doesn't recognize the FA311... And just for ****s I rolled back the OEM Network driver and that didn't work either =(

have you verified what's printed on the chip?

you do not need XP compatibility as there is a Win7 driver for this card/chip

once the driver is installed it shows as an Realtek adapter - not Netgear!

I even just moved the Netgear Adapters PCI slot to a diff available slot and still not recognizing it... And in Device Manager it only shows my OEM adapter under Network Cards, than in Other Devices it has "Ethernet Controller" and "Multimedia Audio Controller" both with exclamation points... I click them and hit update driver, no driver found it says... Well now I finally got it to recognize the driver by manually finding and installing it, and the light on the ethernet port lights up so I know it sees it, but I'm still getting no internet and it says "Local Area Connection" ip Configuration error or some b/s and the Network and Sharing center still show "No Network Access"...

Yeah there is a Netgear symbol and what looks like a Realtek symbol...

have you installed the Win7 driver?

"Local Area Connection" is the Win7 default naming you can change anytime - reboot after the driver has been installed and configure the cards properties like DNS server settings or whatever is needed. maybe compare to the XP tcp/ip settings.

You did not tell how you connect to the internet

So now I got Netgear adapter installed with one of the ways I was trying, but the driver I'm guessing is wrong because it still is not giving me internet... The adapter I think I downloaded was V.1 and I need V.2 i'm guessing..??

i would do a clean install on the HD and just run 7, but i'm kinda glad I didn't because I'd had no internet whatsoever... I got the FA311 Netgear driver installed and it's showing it now in my Network Adapters but when I plug in an ethernet cable it says Identifying for a minute, than says Unidentified Network?? And when I open the Local Area Connection window it says IPv4 Connectivity: No network Access and IPv6 Connectivity: No Network Access??

Hi

I am assuming you are running homegroup and IPv6.It may not support IPv6. you can verify by creating a new network connection using the workgroup model which uses IPv4. It is works you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

Let us know if that doesnt help

I believe I found a solution for this problem on another page. Apparently there are some settings that need to be tweaked in order to get it up and running.

I think I have the NETGEAR FA311, B-1 up and running:

Solution - Netgear FA311 v1 + No Internet + RC Build 7100
http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-...html#post34639

Source: http://www.overclock.net/windows/521674-windows-7-rc-7100-ethernet-drivers.html

After you've installed the NETGEAR FA311, B-1 drivers (I'll have to try to find which drivers I used.)
On a non-working install:
Go to Device manager, right click on NIC, Select properties. Click Advanced tab, Under the property, there should be 3 entries listed:

1. Network Address - Not present selected
2. Speed & Duplex settings - Auto sense (This will be changed to 100TX)
3. Transmit buffers - 160
(Transmit buffers were set at 40 by default on my system for some reason. I think I'm running the 1.80 FA311 drivers - I set this value to 128 (Highest it would go)

Select Power Management tab,
By default Both the check boxes were selected.
(These will be deselected as Netgear website says the v1 doesnt support wake-on LAN and it has a speed of 100Tx.)

THE FIX, (5 steps):
1: Go to Device manager, right click on NIC, Select properties. Click Advanced tab. On the advanced tab, Select Speed & Duplex settings. Change Auto Sense to 100Tx.

2: Change Transmit buffers * Note this is optional 1.8 driver inf sets to 40, I changed to 128

3: Go to Power Management tab, Uncheck both the check boxes.

4: Click Ok and exit out of any menus.

5: Reboot router, dsl/cable modem if it has a built-in router.

Additional info:
No need to reboot- but you may have to power cycle your router /DSL modem if it has a built in router.

For me after doing the above settings I had to go into the "Network and Sharing Center", and change the network type to private (or workgroup) from public..

The only problem with Netgear there are no current drivers - get the Realtek drivers, not many are aware the FA/GA cards have Realtek chips, and all is well out of the box - end of story.

it's simple like that..
