Upgrading an ASUS Netbook to Windows 7

I recieved an interesting challenge from my Boss today. She gave me her daughter's netbook which is an ASUS (I think it is the first or close to first ever made) and is extremely limited in specs...check this out

Celeron M Processor (900MHZ...)
1GB RAM(667MHZ I think...)
8GB SSD(It might be an SSD but 8GB and it happens to be in an IDE-only configuration...)
Intel 915 Int-GPU (Intel GPU, enough said...)

That is the relevant specs...I am wondering if installing Windows 7 will be possible

Ultimate?...NO NO NO
Professional?...NO NO
Home Premium?...NO
Home Basic...Maybe...

I have also heard reports that you can't activate Home Basic in the US. Before someone says to slap XP on it and let it go...her daughter despises XP and loves Windows 7 which led my boss to get me to attempt to install 7 on it. I think the biggest limiting factor here is HD space but I think Home Basic could fit on it...

I know that I can get Ultimate x64 down to 11GB on my laptop (minus System Restore, Hibernation and a pagefile at 512MB)

Yeah, but even if you could get it down somehow to that size for the installation, what about after the installation, you'd have no space for anything else.

That is true to...I could revive ZLite and build it for x86 stipping down everything

I can get it to 3GB that way but it can end up being unstable...

...all jokes aside what options do I have? XP is possible but not possible (she hates it), Vista...lets skip this one, 7 Home Basic *might* be but I don't want to run into an issue with it not activating...

Interesting, when I was testing Vlite on Win7 last winter while laid up, learned the only usefulness for editing it is not performance but size for rumoured tiny HD netbooks.

Interesting, when I was testing Vlite on Win7048 last winter while laid up, learned the only usefulness for editing it is not performance but size for rumoured tiny HD netbooks.

So I'm going to look for my old vLite logs from when I Vlited it down to nearly half the size, mostly leaving out the huge driver catalogue (insert your own), Media Center, and whatnot I forgettaboutit.

That is very true...HD space and in this case might be its saving grace...

If I can get it down to atleast 5.5GB...7 will be a go

Then have her use cloud storage for her junk if she wants some more storage space, i.e, skydrive, etc..

I was going to force her to use a microSD for her songs (4GB should be good enough)...same difference I suppose

That is the closet I have seen to a vLite replacement and looks to be so with a little more time

The RAM usage is unbelievable with the HD space and the fact that it runs incredible also unbelivable!

I m typing the post on it as we speak!!

For the netbook...yes

Nope...it was the first Netbook...only goes up to 800*600
