Solved Upgrading bluray player

I've got the Lg BD 550 that I want to upgrade for 2 reasons: It isn't wifi and will not recognize videos on my comp when connected by USB flash drive.

This is the one that seems to accomplish those goals. LG BP620: 3D-Capable Blu-ray Disc? Player with SmartTV and Wireless Connectivity | LG USA

Anyone have experience with this model or any suggestions on a better choice.

I was considering going to a PS4, but that will not play bluray discs.

Yes, you're right.
I just called Sony tech support (again) and they said an update had recently been given for that.

What it won't do at least until April, is be able to play videos from a USB flash drive, which is one of my requirements(especially for that price.)

The PS3 seems to have what I want - Bluray disc playback and USB playback.

I have the LG BP620 and have had no issues with it. I haven't tried to play files via USB though. For "smart" blu ray players, I would look at the Samsung BD-F5900. You can install a free app on it called Plex that will allow you to use your computer or any storage attached to your computer as a server and you can stream files to it wirelessly over 2.4GHz or 5GHz, or an ethernet cable. You need Plex Media Server installed on your computer and it is very easy to use.....point Plex to where your media is stored and create a folder, TV Shows/Movies for example, and you can stream content via a very nice user interface and a free app.

If you want me to go into more detail just let me know, and I'd be happy to help. I use Plex to stream to 3 different rooms in my house and it is completely free and works very well.

It is not necessary to install any third party streaming applications. You can set up your Windows 7 WMP12 to stream to your PS3.

Share media from my Media Player 12 using Windows 7 with my PS3 - Microsoft Community

Just google on that topic and you may find all necessary step by step instructions on doing it.

Do that when you actually get into the groove.

No, you don't have to install any third party applications, BUT, Media servers such as Plex, and XBMC offer an awesome UI, are simple to set up and are highly customizable.

Is it also possible to stream wirelessly to another TV if I get some sort of adapter that would recognize that TV?

You can ignore the question about wireless connection to TV.
Tech support says the TV I have (panasonic tx-p50x1) is not wifi ready.

The reason I suggested the Samsung BR Player is because I know Samsung smart products support Plex.....there are a few other brands that support Plex as well, but I'm not sure what they are.

Just got the PS3 ( using the controller for setup is a chore, but that's not the question.)

When I plug an external hdd or flash drive into the USB port, how do I access it?

There doesn't seem to be a choice on the sreen.

I downloaded the Plex Media Server and the PS3 recognizes it, but when I click a movie nothing happens.
I click information and it shows that it has the movie on it and the movie plays just fine in the computer. Keeps saying - DLNA error.
PS3 tech support says I have to register it, but I don't see an option for that.
If I can't get it to work, I'll just copy the movies to a flash drive.

Any idea on how to correct this?
