Hi

I bought a windows 7 professional retail disc at launch for my laptop. I have a new laptop now with home preinstalled. Tried installing at it told me to use the anytime upgrade, looking at the discs they both state that they include the anytime upgrade. However the only key I have is the produt key which it will not upgrade with.

Has anyone else had this issue before?

Please follow this tutorial :

This will show you how to do a clean installation with a retail Windows 7

NOTE: Make sure that the CD/DVD drive is selected first in the boot order in your BIOS settings. Usually it is by default.

I have used the product key of my Windows 7 Pro retail disk to upgrade from Home Premium via Windows Anytime Upgrade without a hitch.

Just enter the product key when prompted and the upgrade will take from 10 minutes to half-an-hour or so depending on how many updates are required.

As theog says, no disk is needed, just the product key. The main thing to watch for is SP1. If you install SP1, and then try Windows Anytime Upgrade with a product key from a disk that does not have SP1, the upgrade will fail, meaning you'd have to uninstall SP1 to upgrade successfully, so it's best to upgrade before you install SP1.

When it comes to activating, just click Start and type slui.exe 4 in the Search field then press Enter.

This will bring up the automated telephone activation wizard, from where you need to call the free activation number for your country/region and folllow the automated instructions.
