i have home premium vista on my laptop, can i just get a ultimate disk and upgrade straight to ultimate or do i hav to install W7 home premium then ultimate?

Yes, upgrade straight to Win7 Ultimate.

You can get the Win7 Ultimate upgrade and install it over your Vista Home Premium.
