Solved Upgrading my CPU with Win 7 64 bit

I was just talking to AMD the other day and I found out what all my problems with Windows 7 after doing a stress test and seeing that CPU 0 failed. I was told by the tech from AMD that the main core is starting to fail so I need to replace it ASAP can someone tell my the bust CPU for my computer here's my choices:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 6000+ 3GHz
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 6400+ 3.2GHz

I am able to still get both CPU's on E-bay cheap but not sure what one is the best to get to give me the best performance with Win 7 64bit.

If your motherboard can handle it, get the 6400+. The faster it is the better performance you'll get. You might also want to consider an upgrade kit.

I was told by the computer shop that as along as I get a CPU that came out before my installed BIOS I should be fine the BIOS date is 03/03/2008 and this CPU came out in 2006. I also seen a picture of the same motherboard as I have and this guy had the 6400+ installed. The picture was from CPU-Z. Thanks for your help.

I caution you concerning buying on E-Bay. Oftentimes sellers offer what it is you are looking for at a very attractive price but if you have a problem they are not willing to assist you.

Buying from a reputable (even local?) source is no guarantee that you will not be "burnt" but at least you have done what you could to protect your investment.

This is true but the thing I like about paying with Paypal I am covered also I look at all the feed back before I buy from anyone. Also none of the store around here sell any AM2 CPU's anymore only AM3.

Buying on eBay is fine as long as you check out the seller's feedback and Paypal protects you pretty well so no worries there. And if there's a problem there's a very large forum here to help you out with it anyway haha

By what I am reading about this motherboard it might support the newer AM3 CPU's with a BIOS update but when I go to the Sapphire site and download the BIOS update all I get is the BIOS update don't support my OS. so I tried to install Vista same problem. I installed XP Home and it looked like it worked but when I checked my BIOS date it still says the same date. Also the BIOS date and version don't match any of the versions on the Sapphire site so my guess I need to find out who makes this board and go to their site for the BIOS update. Can anyone help me with this problem cause it would be just as easy to update the BIOS and buy a CPU from the computer store.

The BIOS update utility must be run under DOS.

There's a utility available for download with the BIOS files that allow you to make a USB flash drive bootable. It may be possible to do it from floppies, but I recommend the flash drive.

I tried the DOS BIOS update by making a bootable USB flash drive and for some reason my computer didn't want to load from the USB drive not sure why. I looked at the options in the BIOS for bootup and I have these CD Room, Hard drive, USB HHD, Floppy, LS/ZIP, and SCSI. I do know in the book that came with the motherboard I got said I have to disable the Flash Part Write Protect but in the book it don't show how it only shows where it is but not how to do it

I'm here to tell you that the BIOS settings needed to boot from a USB stick can be very tricky.

On an Intel board I used to use, I had to enable USB booting first AND put USB drive first in boot order AND change USB mass storage to “emulate fixed discs” or something close to that. This last choice was NOT the default.

I tried that by setting the USB HHD as first boot and the light on the flash did light up about 3 or 4 times but then it started to load Windows so I don't now if I need to push one of the F buttons or what.

Look for additional choices in the BIOS that might be even slightly related to USB or booting or hard drive emulation or anything even vaguely related. Inspect all menus.

It sounds like you didn't succeed in making a bootable DOS USB flash drive. You should have gotten a DOS style startup display, even if the flash utility declined to update the board.

You can double-check it by renaming the .bat file on the flash drive. Change the .bat extension, and it won't load on startup. See if the machine will actually boot into DOS.
