Quick update,
Having found that some Acer boards with a certain chip can read 4.08v for the vbat voltage, I power cycles the machine by powering down leaving the plug in and power to the board, powered back on, powered back off, unplugged, plugged back in and powered back on and then powered back down again.
Left unplugged over ight and now boots fine and keeps time and other settings
Thanks guys
