i want to upgrade my RAM which is

Corsair 6GB (3x2GB) 1600MHz Triple Channel i7 XMS Memory Kit CL7 1.65V

and i have had that for almost 3years

should i just buy the exact same RAM again so i then have 12gb, is that best way of doing it

or should i be looking at the latest say 8gb kit?

thanks

well i'd go for 3 x 4gb of the same type to replicate your triple channel setup, you would be disapointed if you went to dual channel ram from triple channel if you were able to notice it.

only the timing's have improved a smidge on ram these days.

Maxheadroom spoke of adding a second triple channel kit, which preserves triple channel operation.

I ran basically that on an Asus P6T Deluxe (not V2). I had to back off the timings a bit, though, to get stable operation. You might get better performance with 3X4GB. (Motherboards sometimes do better when you don't populate all the RAM slots.) There's only one 12GB kit on the QVL for the board, but there must be many good sets that Asus hasn't got around to testing. (www.crucial.com guarantees compatibility, as an example.)

thanks for the replys,

are you saying if i get a triple set exact same as what ive got i may run into problems because im using all the RAM slots?
this way looks like the cheapest option for me.

If you fill all 6 slots, you may have to manually configure the RAM settings in the BIOS to get stable operation.

Or not.

It's not a big deal, and the effect on performance will be minimal if you have to back off the timngs by a tick or two.
