Upgrading PSU

I am upgrading my PSU from a 480w ($30) to something more capable.

They have a sale at the local electronics store here and I was curious if it is of good quality or if anyone has any opinions on the matter..I'm sure you do.

It's gotten decent reviews on Newegg and Thermaltake is a respected brand. You should be ok.

That's a decent price as well, at least for that PS.

Beware of mail in rebates! I have had bad experiences with them... there are plenty of choices out there in this price range. But yes Tt is a well known player in this industry.

Plus you should use something like this PSU calculator Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! to determine your wattage needs... it's a good idea to figure your current max and then add 10-20% more... just in case!

Also, using PSU calculators like this one you can perform a "what if" analysis to see what the wattage requirement would be if you add a 2nd video card for example!

I've always gone with IN-Win or OCZ ... these are two companies who actually make the power supplies they sell.

This is a good price and a good product (according to the reviews) - although I like Antec best. Regarding the rebate I would not worry - just make sure that the paperwork is filled out right. And then you have to wait for 3 months to get your money. Make sure you are at the given address in 3 months because the refunds are not being forwarded.

Fry's rebates are pretty good. Bought a Patriot SSD from there with a MIR. Got it back in 6 weeks. Oh, and that's a pretty decent PSU.

Modular power connectors are always nice.

I'm an OCZ guy myself, but that PSU is a nice one, and cheap, too.

I went with a TR2 RX 750w. Funny thing is all of my fans are SUPER quite compared to the previous PSU. The old PSU wa a "Logisys" Max. Output was 480w and the "Total Power" was 330w. Based on that I would say this 750w was a HUGE improvment. The computer seems to be running a LOT better. This one actually has the 8pin connonctor for the Core i5/i7 processor, where my previous PSU just had 4pin. So I think the system was running strapped for power. I am So happy I purchased it. I know beyond a shodow of a doubt that my system is being supplied the proper power now.

That's the reason that I don't recommend crappy power supplies or cases for that matter. I simply hate noisy computers...there really isn't a reason that you should hear the computer across the room these days.

Here is a good PSU calculator. Even with dual video cards, you likely won't need 850W. Although it wouldn't hurt

IMO it's always a good idea to have more power then you'll need at the moment. It allows you to upgrade to some of the newer cards that would come out over the next year or two. Also taking into consideration the proficiency of the supply the extra room insures you've made a future proof investment. With the power supply more times than not being skimped on, it's nice to see all the suggestions keeping this in mind.I'm also an OCZ guy. Fabe
