OK don't panic i have no plans to upgrade to win 10 anytime soon however i would like to take advantage of the free upgrade to win 10 and keep the ISO file and the win 10 SN's.

I have Win 7 U x64 running on a 250GB SSD (C Drive, which is only used in an emergency) and then the main OS which again is a win 7 U x64 of a 500GB SSD (D Drive) which is what i use 99% of the time, drive C is only used if some reason drive D goes t1ts up and i can go into C drive and get files of that way, any how i know there used to be an app called "MediaCreationToolx64" which you ran and it would download the win 10 ISO and install win 10 and convert your win 7 key into legal win 10 key and allow you to upgrade that way.

So my plan is to back up whole of drive C&D to a 500GB SSD (E Drive) then go about running the "MediaCreationToolx64" tool to do the download and install for both C & D drive get the windows 10 key from each drive then burn to ISO's and keep for a later date, just in case i do want to go 10 route.

ISSUES:
I have heard that win 10 messes about with my partitions, anyone know anything about this? If it does would it be best to just disconnet all drives from PC apart from C,D & E (as i have another 9 drives in the case) or will it be ok to leave in, and are there any other issues i should be made aware off, I have no plans to move to 10 full time but i'm just being safe and saving myself the cost of windows 10 when the free version runs out on the 29th July this year.

Any help, advice or tips would be more then welcome.

You won't get a key after installing Win10. To be able to do a future install (fresh or update) you have to had it installed once on your computer. MS will record an MB ID (probably the network MAC address) and will activate future installations on the MB you have used to do the fist install.
To do so you have two options: Install Win 10 on a HDD or on drive C:
On drive C: you have two options: Fresh install or update.
On a HDD you're going to do a fresh install.
Disconnect your drive D: or any other drive you have from the MB.
- To do a update on your installed Win 7 on drive C:, boot on drive C:, create a USB with MediaCreationToolx64 then run setup on it. Leave the key blank. It will activate because you've updated a Win 7 installation.
- To do a fresh install, on drive C: or on a HDD, create a USB with MediaCreationToolx64 and boot from it. When asked for the Key, put the Win7 U key you have. When finished, it will activate as well.

My suggestion is to do a fresh install on a spare HDD or a SSD. That's what I did. Also install Classic Shell (Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements), so it looks like Win7.
I didn't like Win10. Didn't add nothing useful, and if you disable all the tracking and spy, many features, like Cortana, won't work. Some win7 features won't be there, as games and Classic them.

Hi Megahertz07 thanks for the reply, 2 things i have not mentioned and these are once win 10 was installed i was going to use one of those apps that reveal SN etc, and secondly my LEGAL version of windows 7 U x64 is a little unusual in that it will allow up to 10 installs, however you can register and unlimited number of times if your using the same hardware, so you can format 50 times if you wanted to on the same hardware and it will only count as one registration.

My only reason for wanting to go down this route is i have no plans to move away from win 7 until win 7 stops getting sec update which i think is 2019 sometime, but also given MS have said there will not be a win11 or 12 just constant upgrading of win 10, so i presume i will be forced into it sooner or later

App that reveal SN, like LicenseCrawler.exe wont work. Believe me, I'd already try it. You going to get a generic serial that won't allow to do any future installations in other MB. As I wrote, once you install Win 10, by an update on existing Win7 or by a fresh install using a valid Win7 key, MS will record an MB ID (probably the network MAC address) and will activate future installations on the MB you have used to do the fist install. Once installed the key is the MB ID, that means that you can make a future install on the same MB even without furnishing a key.

Hi,
Win-10 new fast start features do not play well with external or other connected hdd's
So yea I would disconnect any you can before upgrading.

I would also disable fast or quick start in your mobo bios too for good measure.
Also disable fast start inside win-10 power options asap
Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

There's been a lot of talk about all this digital entitlement stuff = once upgraded you can reinstall 10 anytime.
Some have said you don't even have to keep using win-10 past the expiration of the free offer.

So if you have a couple ssd's or hdd's use one for 7 and the other for 10 and have fun :)

I would like to see the read out of this license you speak of you're upgrading
