Upgrading to Windows 8 from Windows 7!

I am using Windows 7 Home Edition Genuine that i got with my HP Laptop, Can i upgrade it to Windows 8 "For Free"?
Someone told me that its possible and i am not sure if it is. Please guide me Thanks.

No, you cannot upgrade to windows 8 for free.

If you have windows 8, you can upgrade to windows 8.1 for free.

But not windows 7 to windows 8.
