Uploading photos & home movies from comera ansd USB

Hello,

I have just bought a new laptop with Windows 7. I have thoasands od photos and many home movies stored on USB sticks. Problem is when I plug it in there is no option to select which files I would like to copy. I have looked in the settings and can not find the option, it just copies all which I don't want that. It also saves them by date and not in the named files I have them in on the key.The same with my camera, I use photos for Ebay and on XP would select the ones I wanted, saved to a file and then could easily adjust them. Now it just wants to copy them all. Also can you suggest a user friendly program for adjusting my photos.
By my user name you will understand I need very straightforward instructions please.

It would help to know what "it" is ... as in "Now it just wants wot copy them all."

My current alter-ego is that of a photographer - I can easily make 1K exposures in less than a couple of hours so transfering image data to a computer is something with which I am quite familar.

If you want to simply copy JPG and movies, I would simply decline the assistance of any pop-ups that appear when a USB thumbdrive is inserted and then use something as simple as Windows Explorer.

For photos/movies on camera, I would remove the memory media and use a card reader attached to the computer. This is usually faster, easier on camera batteries, and safer (long explaination of that last, just trust me on that one).

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "adjusting my photos" - I'm assuming you mean to edit them .... changing exposure, white balance, contrast, saturation, and other features of the photo. If so, there are many options, some of the free. Some you can look at (there are others that I've not listed here)

• Picasa -I believe this is a google product, so be warned
• gimp - free, community supported Photoshop look-alike, quite good, but you have to have a little "computer-eze" on the ball to get it up and running
• Aperture - Not free. I understand not as well implemented as Adobe Lightroom.
• Adobe Lightroom - Not free, but quite good and a my current favorite. It is multi-featured and well implemented. In addition to editing photos, it is also something of a digital asset management software (DAM).
• The industry gold standard is Adobe Photoshop and quite pricey.

There is one more i can reckomend, Windows live Essentials has live Photo Gallery which has a simple aray, with click a photo and tell it FIX very basic but simple to use.
