Hi , Im currently downloading the ISO 32 bit Windows 7 from the digital river site. Upon Completion of this download ive been told to burn the file to a dvd or flash drive. I have no clue what i am supposed to do next. I also ordered the Disk but it will be 2-3 weeks before it gets here.. Can someone help. what software do i need ?and im upgrading from 32 bit vista to 32 bit windows 7.

Do you want to do an in-place Upgrade which keeps your programs, files and settings in place while reinstalling the OS? If so, then the extracted files can be run from the Vista desktop after downloading them by running Setup and selecting Upgrade.

You can also do a clean install by running Setup from Vista and selecting Custom install, which will overwrite Vista and save files in a windows.old folder for later retrieval.

If you want a superior clean install, you should burn ISO to DVD. This way you can boot the DVD and have the Custom Advanced drive tools to format the HD before install.

You'll need a bootable disk anyway to access repair tools if Win7 fails to boot. However you can make a repair CD in the Backup center if you decide you can do without the Win7 install DVD.

Suggest using ImgBurn at 4x speed with verify.

When you load the ISO in using File icon, make sure it says bootable in the text given.

Then back up your files, boot from the DVD, agree to "connect to internet during install" to get latest drivers/Updates into installer during install, then Custom install, use Advanced drive tools to repartition as you wish then format before install.

Upon startup, newer drivers will come in via Windows Updates. Check for any missing in Device Manager, look on Support downloads page for your computer model for those and any apps you might want to keep.

You can also back up the windows/system32/drivers and /driverstore files to browse for any missing drivers later.

I think you forgot i know nothing about installations.. Would it be ok for me to run this from a USB until my Disk comes in the Mail ? I dont know what imageburn is.. I feel like such a loser. Are these Steps you're giving me to install from a dvd or Usb ?

Sure if you have a USB flash you can use that nifty tool Paul provided to make your USB flash drive a bootable Win7 installer.

Then restart your computer and tap the F-Key given on the first bootup screen for Boot Menu. The flash drive will likely be listed under Hard Drives. It should boot if you select it.

Now select to connect to internet during install, do a Custom install, use Advanced drive tools to format the Vista partition to install Win7 there. You an even delete and repartition using those Custom Advanced drive tools.

Thanks guys.. The last question i have is About t he Partitions.. I don't know what that's about. I want a clean install and im not worried about the software that i had previously installed. How will i know what disk to save the operating system to . do i even need to partition anything ? Im really nervous about this.. this is my first time .. sorry

Chances are you have one HD with one partition anyway, which will show up when you select Custom install. Then click on Advanced drive tools so you can format that partition before installing.

Check now to make sure by clicking Start orb> then right click Computer> select Manage > then Disk Management. Look on the drive map and see what partitions are listed.

This is similar to the map you will see when you select Custom install from the booted Win7 installer.

Do you see where you will install Win7?

You are all set to install to the large C: partition there.

You might want to make your Vista recovery disks first so you have a path back to full factory recovery in case you ever want to sell the computer but retain your Win7.

Sometimes maker's require this also when servicing the hardware warranty, although most will provide the recov disks for shipping charges.

Once you install Win7, the recov partition should be disabled. However you can test it by tapping the F-key given on first bootup screen for Recovery.

If it is willing to run, then you might want to keep it, otherwise you can delete it in Disk management as it is wasted space.

Thanks to all who helped me ! It installed Beautifully and it working without a Hitch ! Im happy you guys took the time and patience to work with me.. Very appreciative.
