USB 2.0 Not Working (Screenshots)

Hi, basically my problem is that my relatively new 640GB external hdd when plugged in comes up with a message saying the USB device is not recognizable. Help is appreciated. This is a problem on both my old laptop and my new computer and happened just after I updated a game on my friends external hdd through my laptop and computer. I have already re-installed windows on my computer but with no avail. I await your response and thanks in advance.

there are manual ways to get the drive to work but try the fix and if no luck post back and we will go from there, probably be more answers to this thread to help you also

No luck so far, the fix didn't work just said Unknown Device has a problem or something, this makes me think that the problem is the hdd itself as my friends hdd works on my laptop perfectly. It is a new ext hdd and i think has a warranty but I have files on there that I need. Any help is appreciated.

leave the hard drive plugged in go to device manager un-install the driver for the hdd then reboot and see if windows resets and installs the driver.

thanks again for your contribution but it is still not working, just stated that it failed to install when windows update tries to update the unknown device

ok try this disabling/enabling the USB ports.

Still no luck, would there be a way to somehow access the data on the hdd, as i do not think it is a problem with the usb port just the actual hdd, if not is there a way to format it so i can at least use it or delete the partition and recover it using a partition recovery tool such as ARAX Disc Doctor.

does the drive come on and the disc spin?

Yes it does, i checked for that, no clicking sounds just the normal booting sound,although the disc does stop spinning when the pc says it cant recognize it and turns the hdd off if that is unusual

have you tried changing the usb cable/usb ports and rebooting ? what make of drive is it? go to the website and see if they have a driver for it.

Yep, have 3 different usb cords and 4 different usb ports, tried all of them with the same result

i found this comment from another forum, Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that’s it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don’t really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.
First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be “rebooted” also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!
So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.
Hope this helps someone fix that pesky “USB device not recognized” Windows error!

well i have the same seagate as you but 1TB, and i have had no problems with mine, plug and play, have you looked through the help pages on seagate site or maybe its a idea to contact customer help?

Yeah might just do that, thanks for the help, very much appreciated, it could be that the recently new files i put on the hdd had a virus, and corrupted it, thanks again.
