Yes, it is now time to search for any errors in the external HDD. We'll go about it in two ways. Either method has to be conducted on your friend's pc as is obvious(your PC does not recognize the drive)!

Download Crystal disk info from : Crystal Dew World

Download Seatools from :| Seagate
Testing by Seagate tools is an almost definitive way to assess your extn.hdd's health! Please conduct those tests!

PS: do you directly plug into the lappy's usbs or use a USB hub?

Thanks, i will try and plug it into another computer but, both my laptop and pc have trouble with recognition of the hdd so is there a way to just clear it and if possible save the data, fine if there isnt but i want to at least use the hdd again eventually

i found this comment from another forum, Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that’s it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don’t really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.
First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be “rebooted” also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!
So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.
Hope this helps someone fix that pesky “USB device not recognized” Windows error!


How to fix USB device not recognized in Windows

Just before you try searching for errors in the drive, a slight modification to an excellent advise above by brianzion !

1)Remove the battery from the laptop.

2) Unplug from the main power socket

3) wait for 30 minutes!

4) Poweron the laptop BUT BEFORE YOU DO THIS, PLUG IN THE USB CABLE FROM THE EXTERNAL HDD INTO YOUR LAPPY! THEN POWER ON AND SEE IF THE EXTN. DRIVE IS RECOGNIZED! very sorry for the bold type, it was absolutely for emphasis!

Your data on the drive will not be erased by first conducting the crystal disk test!
The intermediate between the lappy (and the Desktop) and the external drive is the USB! That's the reason why i asked you whether you are directly plugging i to the pc's usb or using a hub. I use a Belkin Hub which has four ports and if it glows yellow, the connection works and if the color(LED) is red no connection was made! Such are the mysteries of USBs!

i have replaced my USB cable for mine and it worked (WD 2TB USB3.0) when i had the same prob i live in the tropics so the rust and go green so i us WD40 on them too keep them like new and clean

Even my Soundcard needed it done now its like a mirror on the PCIe pins same with video cards and ram
Cotton tips to clean and a clean rag to wipe off and my pins/slots on old Pentium 3 pc are also still like new

hi just a word of caution with wd 40 yes its a lubricant that displaces water etc but for pc not a good idea because it can short circuit delicate wirings (as in the usb plugs etc) the best product is Super Servisol Switch Cleaner its a contact cleaner designed for switches and electrical contacts do a google search in your country
