USB 3.0 and Bluetooth conflict

I am using a Sony Vaio that originally came loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate x64. I have been using a bluetooth mouse for months. I recently purchased a USB 3.0 portable hard drive. Everytime I plug in the hard drive the mouse either becomes erratic or stops working altogether. I spoke to Sony and they informed me that they do not support Win 7 Ultimate because there are no drivers for Ultimate. This sounds very strange. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions. Sony's only solution is to reset my computer back to factory settings (Recovery). I think not!

It does seem to be a strange answer I am not near my desktop at the moment and have no bluetooth on my laptop so it is not possible to check on this. I suggest trying your blootooth adaptor in other USB ports it may well be that you will find one where it works.

Thanks Pooch but my BT adapter is internal. I did try moving my external HD to all 3.0 ports and got the same results. I also tried 2 different external HD with the same results. It has to be a conflict between the internal BT radio and the 3.0 ports or their drivers.

You could try visiting the sony site for support, this may be a known problem with a downloadable fix.
You could also try updating your drivers.
VAIO : Sony Europe
I did try to look but could not find the model number that you posted. It may be possible that different countries have different model numbers

Pooch, thanks again. I searched the website. The US site did have my model. I could not find anything so I called them. As I mentioned in my original post, they said it was caused by my upgrading to Win 7 Ultimate. Their only solution was to run Recovery are reset the operatiing system back to Win Home Premium. That is not acceptable to me. I did reload all my drivers and updated all. No change in results. Have you heard of Win 7 Ultimate requiring different drivers than Home Premium?

lol, It should not matter if its Home, Pro, or even Ultimate. A windows 7 driver is a windows 7 driver, the only thing you have to match is if its 32 bit or 64 bit. It's likely you got some one sitting behind a desk going by an on screen script. When the script didn't have an answer to your question he or she just improvised. They didn't happen to have a heavy foreign accent did they?

I kid you not, here is the transcript from the text I had with the tech from Sony:
Miguael_ > Randy, I'm sorry to inform you that Sony doesn't recommend changing the pre-installed operating system as the drivers are only available for the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system.Randy > is this my problem?Miguael_ > We cannot assure the full functionality of the computer with the Windows 7 Ultimate operating system as the drivers are not available for the same.Randy > will sony get drivers for ultimate?Miguael_ > I'm sorry to inform you that the drivers are not available for the Windows 7 Ultimate operating system

So you are saying this is just BS?

In my opinion yes it's BS. You can make up your own mind up though. The thing is, the only difference between editions is added features. They are all installed, its just that some are disabled. You can use any time upgrade to upgrade and not have to insert your windows 7 DVD to do it. The extra features are unlocked. I bet the windows home premium drivers work just fine on ultimate. All of the sites I go to for drivers for my PC's don't ask what edition of windows 7 I'm running, just what version 32 bit or 64 bit. I've never ever seen it stated that this driver only works on Home Premium or Professional, etc. I could see "maybe" hard drive encryption causing a problem, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to. I'm no expert but I'm not a noob ether, it just sounds like BS to me. Maybe somebody else will chime in on this.

My thoughts exactly the only differences are as I said before between 32 bit or 64 bit.

Thanks Pooch and Alphanumeric, you have confirmed my suspicions about the drivers. Do you think it could be some sort of IRQ conflict?

I don't know about your laptop but I know on my fathers Acer the built in Bluetooth adapter is actually plugged into a mini USB port on the motherboard. It is accentually plugged into the 4 th USB port. Does your external hard drive have a power pack or is it totally powered by the USB port. If its only power source is the USB port it may not be getting enough juice to run and messing up the USB bus. I've heard that some laptops limit the amount of power to the USB ports to extend battery life. They don't supply the same amount of current as you would get on a desktop PC. I'm guessing your internal Bluetooth adapter is connected to the USB bus and the external hard drive is messing up the USB bus. If you open device manager and look under the USB devices you may see your Bluetooth adapter listed. That would confirm my suspicions if it is.

Actually. I checked already and found that both my BT and WiMax are listed on my Generic USB Hub. And yes the external harddrive is powede only by the USB port. Your post prompted me to modify my power options. I disable the powersave on the USB ports when plugged in. My BT mouse now works although it's very jumpy. I will keep playing with power setting to see if I can improve the mouse performance further. Thanks this was helpful.

USB ports are usually in pairs so if your laptop has 2 ports on one side and one port on the other, the Bluetooth is likely paired with the single port. Try plugging the external drive into one of the two ports that are side by each. It probably won't make any difference but it can't hurt to try it.

I have 2 3.0 ports on the right side and one eSata/2.0 USB on the left side. The problem does occur when I plug the harddrive into either 3.0 port on the right side. Here is another twist. I also have an Express Card with (2) 3.0 USB ports on the left side. If I plug the hard drive into the Express Card I have no perceivable performance issue with the mouse. Therefore, the problem seems to only be between the 2 built in USB ports and the BT radio. Since I can use the express card, this is not an urgent issue but I find it very annoying and don't like being blown off by the tech from Sony. I will try to get a live tech on the phone but doubt they will be more helpful. At least now I can call their bluff on the Ultimate drivers BS.

Thanks again, I will update date this post if I find a solution.

The Express must be supplying more juice to the external hard drive or is isolating it from the USB bus, or both. Thats my guess anyway.

I spoke to Sony and they informed me that they do not support Win 7 Ultimate because there are no drivers for Ultimate. This sounds very strange.

Sorry I didn't read this entire thread but would just like to add that this is complete BS!!! Windows 7 is Windows 7 driver wise - the only difference would be between 32 and 64-bit versions - not whether the version is home, premium, or ultimate.

The tech who told you that either truly didn't know what he was talking about, or just wanted to get you off the phone. I would suggest you call back and speak to a supervisor and file a complaint.

My two cents.

Same problem / different setup

I have a self-built system (Win Ult x64) using Logitech unified BT keyboard and mouse. The BT-dongle is plugged into an USB 2.0 port. Works perfectly - until I plug my card-reader into one of the two USB 3.0 ports. Then the mouse just stops responding. Other USB 2.0 peripherals seems to work just fine together with the keyboard/mouse. Don't really know where to start looking for a solution. Havent checked Logitech for any driver updates yet, maybe a good place to start. Any other suggestions? Rolf

Hi Rolf L, Welcome to seven forums.

First are you sure this is a Logitech unified BT receiver or the Logitech Unifying receiver? The only blue tooth keyboard I found is this one - Logitech - diNovo Edge Keyboard

At any rate these do not require USB 3 ports to operate - a USB 1.0 port is all that's needed. At any rate I would suggest you try moving the dongle to a USB 1 or 2 posrt and see if that fixes your problem.

Also what motherboard/PC/Laptop do you have that has USB 3.0 ports? Can you post a link.

Thanks.

Hi Rolf L, Welcome to seven forums.

Thanks!

You are of course right - not BT! My fault. But the Unifying receiver for my Logitech K750 keyboard and Performance MX mouse does plug into a USB 2.0 port. Very happy with it.

Motherboard: ASUS P5X58D-E with Intel Core™ i7 Quad Processor i7-950 at 3.06 GHz.

On the P5X58D-E there are two USB 3.0 ports in addition to 4(?) USB 2.0 ports.

I will try a corded set of keyboard/mouse and see if it makes any difference.

Rolf
