Hi all,

I would like to install USB 3.0 drivers for an XHCI controller, onto a running Windows 7 System. Is there a way to get these drivers onto my Windows 7 System without putting into Installation media. I do not want to reinstall.

Is there a way to do this.

Thank You!

Hi mega31,

As far as I know, Windows 7 does not have any built in USB 3.0 support [i.e. not included in the Windows 7 installation process]. I suggest that you look at the website for your Motherboard manufaturer and see if they have any drivers available for USB 3.0.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. I have the drivers already but the issue is I want to add the drivers in an already installed Windows 7 machine. I do not want to create an installation media.

The main issue how to get the USB 3.0 Drivers onto Windows 7 OS that’s already installed. Problem is all of these Motherboard manufacturers have the drivers to be installed in the Windows 7 installation media. As I said my problem is trying to get the drivers on an already installed Windows 7 machine, without going through the Windows 7 setup.

Thanks!

Mega31, you only need a driver if you have a hardware that requires it.
- If you add a PCI board with USB 3.0 to an existing computer you will need to install the related drivers via device manager.
- If you are installing win 7 on a new MB with USB 3.x, you will need to add the USB 3.x and SATA drivers to the Win 7 installation disk (to have USB mouse & keyboard and to "see" the target disk).
Create a Windows 7 USB flash installation with new drives for new MB's - Windows 7 Help Forums

If you take out a HDD with windows 7 from a MB and install it on a new new MB with USB 3.x, it will probably won't work and you may ruin the installation.

If the drivers are in an .exe file, you should be able to run it to install them ..

If they are in .inf, .cat, .sys the you can use something like dism++ to install them for you.

What is the make and model of your computer or motherboard make and model?

The driver will typically be in an .exe format. Meaning you just double click it and it will install.

In my case I needed to write the driver to a CD since USB didn't work after Win 7 install since Win 7 doesn't have USB 3.0 support. So consequently my keyboard and mouse didn't work or USB thumb drives. So optical media was the only way to go.

Did you get an install disk with your XHCI controller? If so, run the install disk. This will install the necessary drivers to get your XHCI controller to work correctly in Windows 7.

I installed a controller card with USB3 ports into a Windows 7 computer. The ports didn't work at first; I ran the install disk that came with the card, and the ports then worked.
