USB 3.0 not working - Code 28

Hi,

I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro x64 fresh, and none of my USB 3.0 ports work any more. USB 2.0 ports work, and the USB 3.0 ports work fine when I reboot to Linux. So it's definitely not a hardware issue. Also, before reinstall, USB3 worked fine.

All the non-working devices show "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"

There's no driver available for this... I'm definitely not running any 3rd-party "driver scanners" out of fear of malware, and frankly, because the real solution should not involve 3rd party software.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

My computers with USB 3.0 ports required installing the drivers that came on the CD with the motherboard. They weren't in Win7, may or may not be built-in on Win8/8.1.

My bad, by "third party software" I meant suspicious "Driver Wizard" adware. I tried to find drivers for my motherboard at the manufacturer's site (asus.com), but apparently my search-fu isn't strong enough.

Thanks for giving me the link! This solved my issue completely.

Word of caution: I tried to install everything in one go without reboot, and had to repair the USB 3.0 driver. Probably safer to reboot after each driver installation even if the system isn't asking you to.

Well, the best explanations I have is either ADD or slow-onset senility.

I've seen the "Hotfix" and "BIOS" links, and somehow missed the USB...
