USB Device Recognition Problems

I have been having problems with recognition of USB devices, mainly with a Canon camera and cards, also with an external hard drive docker. I have updated all drivers, some were several years out of date. I also followed a MS tutorial checking for sleeping ports, I found one. But all to no avail. Found your tutorial General Fix for USB Driver Problems worked down to step 9 to uninstall shadowed devices. Right clicked, uninstall and nothing happened. Went down the list to a shadowed driver, box showing uninstalling, remained on for several minutes. Went to task manager, no activity, so I killed the process.

Looking down the tutorial and read about a corrupted INFCACHE.1. Searched and found 2 versions. One on C drive, recent mod date. One on E drive date of 2011. Could this be the cause, and what to do next???

My onboard USB ports failed last year, so I purchased a USB3 card and installed it in the computer. This gave me four USB3 ports. Then one day, several months later, my onboard USB ports started working again. I have no idea why they stopped working, nor why they started working.

Try installing a USB card, which will provide you some working USB ports. Maybe your onboard USB ports will one day start working again, like mine did. In the meantime, hopefully you will have some working ports from the USB card you install.

USB not recognized message means the m/b controller can't receive the Device Descriptor from the downstream device on the USB bus. You can have a read in the thread HERE

So need to check anything affecting the controller, the USB bus and/or the downstream device

• Check if you have latest BIOS
• Reinstall the chipset drivers
• Are these USB2 ports? If USB3 on Win 7 make sure you have the latest USB drivers
• Try different cable. Try different ports
• Connect directly to computer port. Disconnect any external hub. Disconnect any unnecessary USB devices.
• Can sometimes be a power related problem on either end
  • If laptop, plug it in
  • If device has AC adapter, make sure it's plugged in
  • If device has on/off switch. Try connect device when off. The turn it on
