I am attempting to build a new system and have gotten to OS installation.

When I insert the win 7 disc and start the computer, installation proceeds as expected...windows loads files. Once the first screen comes up that is requesting input from me, the computer automatically reboots if any usb devices are plugged in. I can avoid this reboot if i leave the usb devices unplugged, but the computer has no ps/2 ports so this makes any progress past the first input screen impossible.

I have also tried to install vista or xp. Vista has the exact same problem described above, the reboot loop. XP will not force a reboot, but will disable the usb devices, for the same net result - no progress past the first input screen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

yes...no problems there. from the bios screen i've disable booting from the usb ports...no change. I've also searched for the option to disable auto reboot on system failure, as ive read about this often causing problems, but couldn't find the option.

Do you have SATA AHCI turned on in bios? Try turning it on, if you have that option in the bios.
Also try unplugging any expansion cards you have, if they arent required for the computer to boot up.

Check you have not put any cable connectors onto the motherboard incorrectly. ie only put half the connector on over the motherboard pins.

Did all the USB accessories come with the motherboard?
If not could they be configured wrongly causing your problem.

Check area where the motherboard I/O shield is.
(The area of connectors attached to the motherboard where you plug in the keyboard/mouse/printer etc at the back)

If you put it on wrong there could be a metal cutout sticking into a USB/a.n.other socket causing your reboots/short circuit!
