usb drive hangs on opening files

I have a dell vostro a860 laptop recently i 've installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, there is a problem with my external usb drive which is every now and then when i try to open a file the drive hangs and stops working, i tried the drive in another pc it worked fine on vista and xp systems. I have updated the bios and the problem still exists. I have checked the disk but nothing wrong and in the device manager everything looked well too.

the usb drive is 320 gb of two partitions formatted with ntfs file system

Since you tried it on other operating systems then the is from Windows 7 itself, try making few updates for the system, cuz if it's a fresh clean copy then there might be a small bug that will be fixed by updates.
