USB Drives have power, but dont recognize any device

Hi,

I know there are many posts about usb's not working, but I have yet to find one that included all the circumstances included in my problem. My wife plugged in her I-Pod after removing the computer from hibernation, and it would not recognize any of the usb ports. A message popped up (wish I got to see it) that had a list of usb drives, all saying they're unknown. It was unable to fix the issue, because without the usb ports, I dont have internet. I am thinking I have to obtain the physical driver updates and put them on a cd to update. All I can find are programs that use the internet to find the right updates. Can anybody help me with this problem?
