USB Mass Storage Device/Unknown Device

In Device Manager, there is a USB Mass Storage Device or an Unknown Device, even when there isn't anything plugged in. This is occurring on a Dell Dimension 5100. This is not the pc in my system specs. How do I fix this?

The PC is unplugged from power (with all USB devices unplugged, as well as the DVI and ethernet cables) and the CMOS battery is removed.

After putting the CMOS battery back in and plugging everything in (I also configured the BIOS), there is still a "USB Mass storage device in device manager, even though there isn't one plugged in.

There was still a "USB Mass Storage Device" in Device Manager after installing the hotfix. I figured out that it is the card reader. I uninstalled the "USB Mass Storage device" and rebooted. When it was installing the driver, it said it was a FMD9410NDL1 which is the card reader in this computer.

windude99, just had a thought. I think the card readers are teac, and they might have firmware updates available. not sure as they are old, but dell might have a link.

The card reader is a Samsung. Here is a discussion about it, but not much help. It supposedly uses standard USB drivers, but supposedly came with software which Dell dosen't supply.

Where did you find that at Steve? I checked Dell and it shows Teac. He should be able to look at that one to verify. And it has a firmware update.

According to that link I posted to the Dell communities, they used Teac and Samsung readers. I googled the S# he posted (FMD9410NDL1) and it came back as samsung. Actually, I 'binged' it. lol.

No problem, Dude. If Dell does not provide the software, I doubt if you'll ever find it on Samsung's site. I have trouble finding anything on Samsung's web site.

Yes, plus they're pretty cheap now.

I may or may not replace it. I have barely used it, but don't need it causing problems on that PC.
