Hi All,

Been using the new Windows 7 for a week or so now, everything is great! But i have one big issue. Every time i plug in a USB pen drive or my tomtom device, a window appears with a message saying that the device drivers can not be installed. When i click on the ballon message it just displays the device followed by a red X and 'Failed'

I have tried many usb mass storage devices and i still have the same issue.

Can anyone help???

Thank you for your time.

Gareth

Sounds like you have some issue involving "uppers filters" and USB ports and devices. Do any USB devices work well?

You could Google that and try to find an answer or how to edit the registry to repair it. I'd tell you but I forget where to look in the registry to do this.

In any case, if you attempt, set a restore point before.

Try a Windows Update while device(s) is/are attached. See if they need a drive letter assigned in disk management.

If not, pick your favorite one and right click on it in the device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. No screenshots as alternative, please.

Hi torrentg,

Thank you for your reply, i have tried doing the upper filter repair with no success. my usb mouse works fine and printer? but its just the usb pens and tomtom (which is like a bigger usb pen anyway).

I have tried windows update while they are installed with no success.

I have copied the hardware ids for you:

USB\ROOT_HUB&VID8086&PID2834
USB\ROOT_HUB

Hope that is what you wanted. :)

Thanks for helping me,

Gareth

Before I do anything or make other suggestions, first visit the maker of your laptop's web page. Install any chipset or related drivers you find there.

Hi Torrentg,

I have visited dell's website and updated the bios and usb drivers.

Cheers for your help,

Hey everyone. I'm having almost the same problem. But the problem came when I tried to install a software (random software..) and my pc crashed instantly... so I guess some drivers went corrupt.
I'm google-ing since 3 days I even did a repair (upgrade from 7 to 7 :D ) but it failed and I still can't access any usb mass storage devices... I tried the SFC (Systel File Checker tool), replaced some .sys files (USBSTOR.SYS, partmgr.sys, disk.sys) but had no success! Tried the upfilter/lowfilter registry thingy also.. no go. By the way.. in a Windows 7 virtual machine on VMWare when I connect my Hard Drive it's recognized.. So it's for sure a software problem and not a hardware problem.
I'm really a knowledged user and even work as a IT but I have no clue how to fix the problem...

Any suggestions?

Did you check disk management to see if it need a drive letter assigned to it?

What about device manager? Do they show up in there?

Thanks for you answer, torrentg.
I can't see the device in disk management.
Here is a screenshot from device management:
http://i33.tinypic.com/v5fo5e.png

Tried uninstalling every single usb device... no success. I'm sure that a driver is corrupt but no idea how to fix it. Replaced .sys files as already mentioned from a good installation but this didn't help.

Ok, let's start with your most favorite device that isn't working. Right click on it in device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste results here. Please no screenshots as alternative. (If you have to use a screenshot later on for something, attach to a post using the paperclip function above where you type.)

I'll see about locating a good driver with instructions on how to install.

I think it must be some kind of a controller driver... but I already downloaded and tried Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard (Asus P5B Deluxe).

Hope you can help me.. thank you.

I'm still checking on possible solutions, but are you sure you ran sfc like this from an elevated command prompt and rebooted?

sfc /scannow

Did it find any errors?

Upload this file after compressed to .rar or .zip with paperclip -

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

And also check the date on the chipset drivers you installed using the device manager. See if they actually did update. Sometimes they report that they did but they actually don't.

OK, date in device manager for the intel host controller is 5.8.2009. The driver that I downloaded and installed (Intel_Chipset_V9111019_XPVistaWin7) has the date August 18 2009.
Does this mean they're not updated?

I had to do a new sfc /scannow because I deleted CBS.log.
C:\Users\encrypt>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Yes, probably not updated then. You can right click on the devices (controller most important here) in device manager and choose update driver software. Browse. Let me pick. Have disk. Browse. Now find the appropriate .inf in the chipset driver package for the device. Double click on it and hit ok.

I'll look at the log now and see if there's anything.

I did this.. it was the same driver. Device manager says it's already up to date.
I think there is nothing wrong with the controller because only usb devices with mass storage don't work (e.g. usb flash, usb hdd, usb card reader).. My mouse and all other usb devices work without problems.

I think I just need the USB Mass Storage Class Driver for Windows 7 (x64) in a somehow of installer that will replace the old one...
Is there maybe a custom USB Mass Storage Class Driver?

I fixed the problem.
The problems were because of the Upperfilters... I compared the registry items to a good installation and replaced the wrong entries.
The value for Upperfilters under the Disk drive was "PartMgr, snapman". I deleted the snapman entry and it worked now.
Hope this helps other people too.

Earlier this evening I posted the following message and having just read your thread I wonder if it applies to mine. If so I'm not sure what i have to do. can you help please?

my message:-

Could A Clean Installation of Windows 7 Reformat My Portable Fugitsu Handydrive?
I am hoping very much that someone can help me out of a catastrophic situation that I find myself in after having done a clean installation of Windows 7.
The situation is that I used my 500 GB Fugitsu HandyDrive to store the Windows Easy Transfer file and now neither of my two computers will recognise the HandyDrive - they just keep saying “new hardware found - looking for drivers” but don’t find any.
This is devastating as it is (or was!) almost ¾ full of months of hard work - some backed up some not (my fault of course).
I have been using the HandyDrive to work between my 18” and 10” laptops both of which had Vista.
I have the Acer Windows 7 Upgrade Kit for the 18” laptop and after 4 failed upgrade attempts and one failed clean installation, I tried one last clean installation which at last was successful. Each time I ran the Upgrade Advisor and carried out the recommendations. The Handydrive was shown as “USB Mass Storage Device” and shown as being Compatible with Windows 7.
I saved the Windows Easy Transfer file on the Handydrive.
After the successful installation of Windows 7, I carried out the Easy Transfer but was dismayed to find I had very few programs now (I had thought they would be on the Upgrade disc but cant find them). I took the Handydrive out of 18” (now with Windows 7) and plugged it into 10” with Vista so that I could print the Upgrade Advisor file I had saved, which showed the programs I had before clean install. Disaster - it wouldn’t work!
I have written to Fugitsu to see if they can help but in the meantime can anyone on this forum tell me what I’ve done! I will be devastated if I cant recover the data on the HandyDrive.
Also how do I get the programs I am missing
I do hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance!
