USB port appears to be stuck when outputing streaming media

I have what seems to be a strange problem with m USB ports.
I am running Win7 64bit on a HP Pavilion dx5.

I was running Winamp listening to a streaming media file through my external
speakers when i decided to plug in my usb headphones ti listen. However
now WHENEVER I play ANY streaming media file through Winamp or WMP
the audio gets directec to the USB headphones even though there are no
headphones plugged in or not. If any music is then played with the same
WMP or Winamp the audio gets directed to the speakers. Play the streamng
media and the audio gets redireced to the USB.

For some strange reason I cannot get any streaming media to be released
from the USB, and be direced BACK to the speakers as I desire. The USB
seems to be STUCK on when trying to play steaming media.

I simply wan to be able to plug an then unplug the headphones and the sysem
act as it should.

Sometimes you need to give things a nudge, Play your streaming media click on start orb rb: type sound, click on it when it appears, a new window will open, right click on an empty part of the window and select "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disabled Devices", then you can right click on your Speaker device and select "Set as Default Device" finally click on Apply.

Well I ALREADY tried that except that window says that the USB headphones
are the SPEAKERS!. The whole system is somehow confused over the
USB headphones. I've eve tried uninstalling the headphones but that does not
alter the problem. It's STUCK on the USB headphones even when they are
not plugged into the USB port!

Ok I have gone through section 2 of the
USB Driver - General Fix for Problems

and have sucesfully deleted the INFCACHE.1 file. I then shut down the system
and rebooted. A new INFCACHE.1 was created exactly where he previous one was.

I then checked the SOUNDS settings dialog box, and reloaded the offending
streaming fle. The result... NO CHANGE.

The problem remains the same. All other sounds are directed to the existing external
speakers EXCEPT for the streaming medias audio which continues to be directed
to set OF NON-EXSTING headphones, I REMOVED the LOGITECH headphone
USB driver, and the streaming sounds are still being redirected towards the
headphones.

I'm wondering if the Windows system registry is maintaining some value
the is corrupting the system regarding streaming media.

Strange what happens when you deactivate the headphones in sounds?
The other thing that may work would be to reinstall the sound drivers.

The most likely problem is the USB device has set itself as the Default Playback Device in the Sound Panel. You will have to go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel and reset your "Speakers" (sound card) as the Default Playback device.

If this hasn't been too long ago, a System Restore back to a date prior to the problem MAY take care of it.

I tried a system restore. Sorry, it didnt help. I tried reloading my sound card
drivers. It did not help either.

I'm out of ideas, short of "reload your operating system".

Did you try deactivating the headphones?
If you have a windows DVD you could try a repair install; http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R this will leave all your personal stuff intact.

Well I did REPAIR INSTALL with my VALID Win7 64 bit cd andi t did NOT resolve
the issue. The problem remains the same.

And now it has CREATED an issue because now the system refuses to accept my
valid product id code online to re-active Windows, which DOES PLEASE me
at all. It would be a simple telephone call fix if in was in the USA, but I'm
not, I'm currently located in the Philippine Islands.


So now how do I fix my registation problem, after following your suggested
repair install, which did not solve my original issue.

Sorry about this, I could not know you were away from home. I have asked for help to get this problem fixed.
I do believe that no matter where you are, you select the country that you are in and you should be given the option of two telephone numbers one of them free to activate Windows

Do I understand right that music from your own files play correctly and only streaming media gets confused?
Look into your Audio card's control panel and see if there is a setting to disable speakers if head phones are plugged in. There may also be some setting to map the connectors differently too, for example, if you're using stereo or 5-1 speakers.

As for the Windows key problem, it should give some other links to help you activate. Have you recently done another reinstall or repair? Changing hardware often triggers Win7's activation to be invalid too.

Also have a look at How to Uninstall the Product Key Number and Deactivate Windows 7 and Vista
Reading all the replies, there are more tips in them. I'm thinking if you can deactivate your current install and reinstall your key, it may "take".

Well now I have a REAL problem.

I cannot find a way to get my Windows activated.

First let eme state that I am HANDICAPPED, having sufferd stroke about
10 years ago.

Entering the product ket AGAIN, just results in n error,

So.. I make a phone call to the Microsoft service center number given for the
Philippnes, and upon reaching it get to the automated entry system.
This method is almost IMPOSSIBLE for a handicapped person with only
ONE working hand to operate. Its impossible to hold the cell phone AND
type entries at the same time. (YOU try it and see how far YOU get).

Trying to get a BODY to talk to os near IMPOSSIBLE, and if you d
either the cant hear me, or I cant hear them.

So Im SCREWED!

And if there is some scheme to help the HANDICAPPED get this porcess
accomplished, I cant find it!

So.... HELP,,,, where in the world do you go from here now?

I'm sorry for your situation eatc7402. If the cell phone has a speaker option you can use that?

Also try re-entering the key very slowly, I have made mistakes typing before, especially with 30 numbers.

I would like to re-open any possible discussion on this thread.
I STILL have the very same problem and I am more convinced
than ever that this is a REGISTRY setting problem, but I have no idea where to start searching or for what. But I can add this.. haveing just installed Real Player for
the first time ever on this system it shows the exact same symptoms as WinAmp
an WMedia Player have shown for year.

Did you get your activation done OK?

I am assuming by streaming you mean music/video from the web and from within a browser. Check in the browser's tools/controls for add ons for the media players and see they are enabled.

No. I am referring ONLY to streaming AUDIO (real time public safety radio traffic).
And not through a browser at all, but using a direct url into the audio players.
