Out of nowhere!
I first noticed my Blackberry wasnt syncronizing automatically as it used to, after I upgraded to BB 6.0. I tried the portable HDD which didnt do anything and no flashdrives were regognized.
I tried to uninstall BB6.0 (unsuccessfuly) It froze. Just coulndt do it.
When trying to install BB5.1 from a CD, it didnt want to autorun, although the CD was turning.
I followed a thread to get the DVD working by toggling the autorun option and installed BB 5.1. I couldnt sync, though as none of the USB is working. Stragely my logitech mouse works. It seems that if a device is connected in the USB before I start up the machine it works OK, when inserted after start-up it doesnt work.
I have tried MS Fix it for hardware devices and it has been running for 4 hrs "resolving" problems. I suspect its not working.
What can I do?
(Win 7 does not shut down normally when I have connected to the office network. For some reason it "shutting down" never does. On the home network it shuts down normally)

I can find them. Do you think a mere re-install of windows 7 will solve this issue?

Switch off PSU
Pull the power plug/mains lead right out of the socket.
Pull all usb leads/receivers out - except for mouse/keyboard
Remove battery from a laptop!

Leave without any power source for a couple of minutes.

Reattach battery for a laptop.
Reattach Power lead,

USB chip will be reset and OS(WIN7/XP etc) will hunt for any new USB connections automatically (as long as you haven't fiddled/turned anything off in 'Services'.)

Just like to add that many esp. laptop motherboard USB ports do actually die. Could be a solder break/haircrack.
Usually one, then another!

There usually is no solution other than to try to replace the motherboard which the original manufacturer will sting you with about half to 2/3rds the cost of a brand new laptop.

Or get a magnifying glass + multimeter + solder kit out.

Hi there
+1 for you because --although a different topic completely your method worked.

I had a Nokia X6 phone which W7 refused totally to recognize even using the Nokia dedicated data usb cable. Using bluetooth to transfer music files to the phone was slow and tedious (phone has internal 16 GB memory so can get a decent amount of music files on it).

Used your method --guess what on next boot computer said found new hardware etc etc and found the phone.

Cheers
jimbo

Bankers aren't the flavour of the month here either(although I'm currently working in Paris France --great place.)

I'd love to see Messrs Blair and Brown in the dock at the Old Bailey or even better in the Hague at the international Court.

The French would re-erect a Guillotine in the Place de la Concorde and chop their heads off in public if they could as well as any Bankers they could get hold of.

I'd get my Mum over here to start knitting on the guillotine's steps as the heads rolled into the collection basket.

I've also given your USB solution to some other people who believe it or not have never heard of the W7 Forum.

Cheers

I have tried the power down and battery removal/ SCAN. Didnt make a difference. Took a big risk in my opinion, to follow Richc46 Window 7 re-install. Did it anyway, it run for 6hrs due to the Pavillion dv6 inability to shut down without outside intervention.

Fact is, didnt work. (t was not in vain, though as I am sure it fixed other problems.) he USB devices have to be connected prior to startup in order to be recognized. That is my short term work-around!

It seems to be a bigger problem here. I have followed some threads on this topic with multiple proposed work-arounds. Re-install, power down, uninstall Root USB, earlier version, PCI additions....you name it. For some guys it works, but there is a handfull of people still stuck with this problem. A software, rather than hardware problem as reinstating earlier versions (negating MS updates) of MS 7 is the one option that works without fail.
On the MS support pages, I have not been able to find a specific stand/ solution/ plan or sympathy vote for this.
I guess patience, and trial and error with updates might solve the problem over the longer term. Thanks for the helpfull responses (the soldering iron and magnifying glass option was not helpfull)

I have had a similar issue with USB device no longer being recognised under Win7, first with memory stick(s), then with external drive and the latest with usb printer, Windows reports that all of these devices have malfunctioned, I had tried all the fixes mentioned here and in other forums with no luck, finally went into bios disabled USB 2 controllers rebooted now have access to all usb ports again, this could be a mainboard problem (Gigabyte for me) or a chipset or ?, this issue seems to be quite widespread, would be interested to hear from any tech heads here

Whatever the problem is - seems far worse with Win 7 and multiple USB devices (+ in-out usb sticks)

Maybe they clash calling for priority and cancel each other out @ basic machine programming levels.

Which is why they reappear on resetting the usb chip ( turning off USB in bios??) by pulling the electric power!
