I have two PCs in my office: self-built mATX tower & HP TouchSmart IQ506. I also recently bought a WD My Passport Essential SE 1TB portable hd.
Yesterday I plugged the new drive into the self-built pc. It didn't work. Tried the ports in the front of the case and those on the back.
Then, out of curiosity, I tried the drive the TouchSmart. It worked normally.
What is the problem with my self-built pc not putting out sufficient power for the drive? The specs of the pc are below.
I have had this happen before with older portable hard drives, an inland sata/ide usb drive adapter and a 2.5" ide drive enclosure. All these devices except the usb drive adapter are powered from the pc. The adapter has an ac plug.
It is a psu problem, a mobo problem, both or what?
