USB > Powered Speakers - Balance question

Hi guys - I just bought Audioengine HD3 speakers, which have a USB IN port on the left speaker. I connected it, everything works great except I can't find a place to adjust the balance.


I found the Balance control under Sounds in the Control Panel - clicked on the Audioengine speakers...Properties, Levels - and there is a Balance control - but it doesn't work. The "L" slider changes the volume of both speakers and the R slider does nothing.


The speakers also have a 3.5mm IN so I could connect them to my PC that way, but it means plugging it into the Realtek riser card, which came with the mobo. The codec - ALC889 - is fine, it's not noisy, no complaints. But I want to avoid using the Realtek software.


Is there a way to adjust the stereo balance - or the volume of the speakers individually - in Win7? If it's only the Balance control I found in the Control Panel - any idea why it doesn't work correctly?

I do not know why that is. I can adjust balance on my USB headset via the Windows Sounds properties on both L and R channels. I do not have USB external speakers to test, I do not see why they should be different to the USB headset.

Your only hope would be to contact the manufacturer.

Why don't you contact Tech Support for Audioengine and ask them?

Ya I guess I may have to do that - seems like it would be an obvious thing but - guess not! Thanks for your suggestions you guys I appreciate it.

The reason for one side being adjusted and not the other side is because it sounds like you have a monaural input or output.


See here where it says output to right passive speaker? That may need to be connected.

Thanks for your help folks. I emailed tech support at Audioengine and here is the reply:

It is a known oddity with the way the HD3 interacts with system balance setting adjustments when connected via USB. If interested in adjusting the balance, we do suggest using 3rd party software to do so. For Windows users, Equalizer APO works great: http://sourceforge.net/projects/peace-equalizer-apo-extension/

The Peace software is pretty amazing (it's free, no nags or ads). You can make extremely granular adjustments to your sound.
