I've been having problems with being unable to click sub-menus in My Applications and clicking sub-menus after right clicking an item. I had My Computer open while trying to figure out what was going on and saw that my two USB thumb drives were blinking. It seemed every time one of them would blink, it would close or prevent me from clicking a sub-menu. After I ejected both drives, every thing was good. If I plug the drives back in, I'm also good. If the drives are plugged in during startup or restart, I have this problem. All windows update are current. So not sure what could be causing this. There aren't any errors in the event log related to this.

Hi silent54,

Could you please describe this blinking? And also, could you please go into a little more detail on how it effects the performance of other areas within your hard drive?

Thanks,

I thought blinking was self explanatory. Ok, when you have Windows Explorer open all drives are solid where my two thumb drives are blinking like lights on a router. I can access the data on them but because of the blinking, it take more than a double click sometimes to access the drives. It doesn't effect my hard drives just my ability to click on sub-menus within Windows.

ex: If I go into 'All Programs' and click on my Microsoft Office folder, the second I move the mouse to click on an application or sub-menu it closes due to the blinking. Same also goes if I try to click Switch User or Restart. If I'm fast enough I can click on one of these but I have to be fast or the blinking stops what I'm trying to do.

I believe because of the blinking, Windows thinks I'm trying to open one of the thumb drives and stops me clicking on a sub-menu or anything like it as in the example. Once I eject those two drives, I'm good. If I add the two drives back with Windows open, I'm good. This only happens when I either start my PC or restart it.

Hi silent54,

Okay, thank-you. This is truly puzzling. Can you think of anything on the USB that's set to autorun on startup? Do you feel comfortable removing everything from the USB (put it on your hard drive) and seeing if the problem persists? I'm going to hunt around some more, but I have a feeling that Windows isn't liking something that's on your USB.

Thanks,
Harvey Meale

Not exactly sure what was going on but I removed the data from both drives and reformatted them. I put the data back and restarted. Problem seems to be solved I guess. Thanks for the help.
