So im going to try to explain this as well as i can.
I am running a windows 7 and I have a radio I would like to program. The main issue is that the program needed to program it is for DOS. So I installed DOS 6.22 On my VMWare virtual machine (VMware Workstation 8.0.0) and ran the program. Now the radio connects with a serial cable. but since I am using my laptop (lenovo ideapad z575) It does not have a Serial port. So I am using a USB to Serial Adapter (Trendnet TU-S9). But DOS will not recognize it.

What I am wanting to do overall is to make my windows 7 computer assume that my USB adapter is a physical Serial port so that I can go into VMware and attach a "physical" serial port to my VM. any Ideas or other suggestion i could try? thanks and sorry for the read.

Did the trendnet USB to serial adapter come with drivers? Usually devices like that will. If not you can find them on the website most of the times. You may have to just install the drivers on your machine, and within the VM.

I'm not totally familiar with this, but you may need to "attach" the device in the VMware options.
